Chiang Mai Zoo is located on Huay Kaew Road, Suthep Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Mai District, approximately 5 kilometers from the city center. The zoo sits at the foothills of Doi Suthep and features gently sloping terrain with extensive green spaces, creating an atmosphere quite different from typical urban zoos. Inside, it showcases a wide variety of animals, including native Thai species and animals from abroad, with exhibition zones designed to support learning, recreation, and family-friendly experiences for visitors of all ages.

 

One of the defining characteristics of Chiang Mai Zoo is its large area, allowing visitors to spend anything from half a day to a full day exploring the grounds. The walking routes alternate smoothly between outdoor zones, indoor exhibits, and resting areas, helping to reduce fatigue and keep the experience engaging. In addition, the zoo offers educational displays related to wildlife and nature, enhancing the visit beyond simply “walking around to see animals.”

 

For those seeking a different experience from daytime visits, Chiang Mai Zoo also offers the Twilight Zoo night tour program. This activity involves riding a vehicle through designated areas to observe nocturnal animals during their active hours, accompanied by staff or guides who provide explanations along the route. It offers visitors a new perspective on animal behavior that is rarely seen during the day.

 

Getting There: From Chiang Mai city center, take Huay Kaew Road toward Doi Suthep. After passing Chiang Mai University and the Arboretum area, the entrance to Chiang Mai Zoo will appear on the left-hand side. The zoo is easily accessible by private car, taxi, local transport services, or ride-hailing apps. Visitors are advised to allow extra travel time on weekends and public holidays, when visitor numbers are typically higher.

 

 

A: Visiting the main zones and the aquarium typically takes at least 3–4 hours. Exploring multiple zones and additional activities may require nearly a full day.
