Mukdahan Province is an important border province in the northeastern region of Thailand (Isan), playing a significant role in economy, trade, tourism, and culture. The settlement was named “Mukdahan.” Later, during the reign of King Taksin the Great, Chao Kinaree was officially appointed as the first ruler of Mukdahan, reinforcing its role as a frontier city and cultural center in the Mekong region.

 

During the administrative reforms in the reign of King Rama V, Mukdahan became part of Nakhon Phanom Province. It remained a district for many years until it was officially established as Mukdahan Province in 1982, becoming the 73rd province of Thailand and the 17th province in the northeastern region.

 

Today, Mukdahan is divided into seven districts: Mueang Mukdahan, Khamcha-i, Don Tan, Nikhom Kham Soi, Dong Luang, Wan Yai, and Nong Sung. Each district offers its own unique cultural identity, local traditions, and tourist attractions.
