Phetchaburi Province is located to the southwest of Bangkok and serves as an important gateway between Central Thailand and the South. It is widely known as the “city of palm sugar” due to the abundance of sugar palm trees across the province. These names are believed to be derived from the ancient name “Phrip Phli,” which is still reflected in the historic Wat Phrip Phli temple in the province.

 

During the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods, Phetchaburi served as a key frontier city among the western provincial network. Its rulers were often members of the royal lineage. In the Rattanakosin era, the province evolved into a royal retreat destination. King Rama IV, who favored Phetchaburi even during his monkhood, later ordered the construction of a royal palace complex, temples, and a large pagoda atop a hill near the city. This site was named “Phra Nakhon Khiri,” now famously known as “Khao Wang.”

 

Later, during the reign of King Rama V, another royal residence known as “Phra Ram Ratchaniwet” or “Ban Puen Palace” was constructed in the city, featuring European architectural styles. King Rama VI subsequently built “Mrigadayavan Palace” along Cha-am Beach as a seaside retreat, believing that the coastal climate could help improve health. Because of these three royal residences, Phetchaburi became known as the “City of Three Palaces.”

 

Today, Phetchaburi is divided into eight districts: Mueang Phetchaburi, Khao Yoi, Nong Ya Plong, Cha-am, Tha Yang, Ban Lat, Ban Laem, and Kaeng Krachan. Each district contributes unique cultural, natural, and economic characteristics to the province.

 

Phetchaburi offers a diverse range of attractions, combining nature, history, central Thai culture, and distinctive local cuisine. One of the most iconic landmarks is Phra Nakhon Khiri (Khao Wang), a historic hilltop palace from the reign of King Rama IV that provides panoramic views over the city.
