During the historical period, archaeologists believe that Krabi was once known as “Banthai Samor,” one of the twelve zodiac cities under the Tambralinga Kingdom, centered in present-day Nakhon Si Thammarat. The city’s emblem was a monkey, and the area continued to be inhabited continuously through the centuries into the Rattanakosin period.

 

In the early Rattanakosin era, when Thalang (modern-day Phuket) was destroyed by Burmese forces, Krabi was developed as a replacement port city. During this time, elephant capturing was a major activity in the Pakasai area. Migration into the region increased, leading to the formation of larger communities. The settlement grew into a district known as Pakasai, which was later relocated closer to the sea near the mouth of the Krabi River. This relocation improved accessibility for maritime trade, as the original inland location was less convenient for transportation and commerce.

 

In 1872, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), Pakasai was officially elevated to city status and granted the name “Krabi,” becoming administratively part of Nakhon Si Thammarat. Later, in 1896, it was transferred to the Phuket administrative region. By 1901, the city center had moved to its current location, and in 1933, Krabi was officially designated as a province.

 

Today, Krabi is divided into eight administrative districts: Mueang Krabi, Ao Luek, Plai Phraya, Khao Phanom, Khlong Thom, Lam Thap, Ko Lanta, and Nuea Khlong. Each district offers unique attractions, from coastal landscapes to inland forests and cultural communities.
