Phichit

Phichit Province is located along the Nan River in the lower northern region of Thailand, situated between Nakhon Sawan and Phitsanulok. Within the city, both the Nan River and the Yom River flow through. The name “Phichit” means “a beautiful city,” shaped by valuable northern Thai culture and traditions. It is also known for its distinctive northern cuisine, which is worth trying and reflects deep Buddhist faith along with unique local wisdom. Phichit Province is an ancient city dating back to the Sukhothai period, as recorded in Inscription No. 1 of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great and Inscription No. 8 of King Lithai, where it was referred to as “Sa Luang City.” At that time, it held the status of a major city of the Sukhothai Kingdom.

 

Later, during the Ayutthaya period, the city was renamed “Okhaburi,” meaning “the city in the water,” and it was also the birthplace of King Sanphet VIII, also known as King Suea, one of the kings of the Ayutthaya Kingdom.

 

During the Rattanakosin period, Phichit became a small city governed by local rulers like other towns. In the reign of King Rama V, the city was relocated to Ban Khlong Riang, a newly dug canal, due to the shallowing of the Nan River. Eventually, Khlong Riang became part of the Nan River.

 

Today, the old city area of Phichit still contains many historical sites dating from the Sukhothai to the Ayutthaya period. In addition, Phichit is also known as the origin of the famous Thai folklore “Krai Thong.”
