Mae Ya Waterfall is one of the largest and most beautiful waterfalls in Chiang Mai. Located within Doi Inthanon National Park, it is often mentioned among Thailand’s “Top 10” waterfalls thanks to its dramatic cascade dropping from a steep cliff of roughly 280 meters. The water fans out into a wide curtain, like a living rock face, giving Mae Ya a rare mix of grandeur, softness, and raw power all at once.

 

Mae Ya’s charm is not only its height, but the way the water flows. Rather than a single narrow drop, the stream spreads and descends in broad tiers across the rock surface, creating a deep, resonant roar through the valley. During the rainy season and especially in the late-rainy to early-cool season, when water volume is at its best, the waterfall looks particularly spectacular.

 

Ecologically, Mae Ya Waterfall is part of Doi Inthanon’s headwater forest system. Its flow supports downstream creeks and the wider forest’s health, which is why the surrounding area remains lush and humid with a rich variety of montane plants. The overall atmosphere stays cool and refreshing throughout the year, especially in the morning and right after rainfall.

 

Mae Ya is ideal for travelers who want a “easy-to-reach, still-feels-like-forest” kind of nature experience. From the parking area, the walking path to the waterfall is short—about 200 meters—not too difficult, yet it still feels like you’re stepping into real woodland. Once you reach the viewing area, the waterfall fills your entire field of vision without needing a long hike or steep climb.

 

Getting There From Chiang Mai city, take Highway 108 toward Chom Thong District, then turn onto Highway 1009 (the Doi Inthanon route). At the junction for Mae Ya Waterfall, turn left and continue for about 14 kilometers. From the parking area, walk approximately 200 meters to the waterfall. The footpath is generally clear and not very steep.

 

Although Mae Ya is a well-known attraction, responsible travel still matters. Avoid entering dangerous sections of the stream, do not litter, keep noise respectful, and follow National Park rules so this landscape can remain healthy and beautiful for the long term.
