Attractions in Thailand

Lalu is one of the most remarkable natural attractions in Sa Kaeo Province. Located around Ban Noen Kham and Ban Khlong Yang in Thap Rat Subdistrict, Ta Phraya District, it lies approximately 36 kilometers from the district office. The name “Lalu,” derived from the Khmer language meaning “to pierce through,” aptly describes the unique geological formations shaped by erosion—soil walls, cliff-like structures, and pillars created by rainwater, soil collapse, and long-term weathering.

The vast Lalu area spans several thousand rai and was originally cultivated land and sediment soil. Over time, rainwater carved through layers of earth, causing soft soil to collapse while the stronger layers remained intact. These remaining structures formed through natural sculpting now resemble walls, cliffs, pillars, and layered formations of various shapes. Some areas are reminiscent of Phrae’s famous “Phae Mueang Phi,” earning Lalu the nickname “the new Phae Mueang Phi of Eastern Thailand.”

Exploring Lalu feels like walking through a natural earthen city. Some paths are flat and easy, while others require walking along soil walls or climbing gentle slopes. The best visiting time is early morning or late afternoon, when slanted sunlight enhances shadows and textures on the soil formations, making them ideal for photography.

The charm of Lalu lies not only in its scenery but also in the community-based tourism model that connects visitors with local life. Tourists can hire “E-tak” tractors or local transport vehicles to explore the formations. Local guides and youth guides offer explanations about the geological formation of Lalu, community history, and the best photo spots. Transport fees are usually around 200 baht per vehicle, accommodating around 6–10 people depending on local arrangements.

For those wishing to fully immerse themselves in local culture, Lalu Homestay in Moo 12, Ban Khlong Yang, Thap Rat Subdistrict, is available. The village offers around 10 homestays, each accommodating 10–20 people, while the visitor center has two large rooms that can host several dozen guests. It is ideal for groups, schools, or travelers seeking community-based learning experiences.

Several activities complement the main Lalu experience. Aside from exploring the formations themselves, visitors can enjoy cycling or riding E-tak tractors through rice fields, chili farms, fish ponds, and local cotton-weaving communities aligned with the sufficiency economy philosophy. Other nearby activities include observing wild junglefowl at Wat Pa Nong Phak Waen, watching cultural performances—such as Pong Lang music, folk dances, and Bai Sri blessing rituals—performed by local students, and connecting with nearby national parks.

Lalu is also a gateway to Sa Kaeo’s eco-tourism network. From October to May, birdwatchers can visit the “Snake Bird Route Waterbird Festival” at Phra Prong Reservoir in Watthana Nakhon District to see Oriental Darters and various waterbirds. From June to July, travelers can continue to Pang Sida National Park to experience one of Thailand’s largest annual butterfly migrations.

Getting There From Aranyaprathet District, take Highway 348 (Aranyaprathet–Ta Phraya). Turn left at Ban Kut Toei (KM 35–36), then follow Highway 3486 (Ban Khok Lan–Ban Khlong Yang) for about 18 kilometers. From Ban Khlong Yang, continue along a dirt road for roughly 1 kilometer to reach the village and the E-tak boarding point. Private cars can access the road, but caution is advised during the rainy season.

Before traveling, it is recommended to contact the Lalu Visitor Center or the local administrative office to confirm route conditions, transport schedules, and guide availability. This is especially important for group visits to ensure smooth coordination.
