Wat Tha Thung Luang is located at No. 16, Moo 1, Ban Tha Thung Luang, Tha Thung Luang Sub-district, Mae Tha District, Lamphun Province. It is a temple of the Maha Nikaya sect, occupying an area of 2 rai.
To the north, the temple is adjacent to the Tha Chak - Mae Tha Road. To the east, it is bordered by a public road. The south side connects to a canal, while the west is bordered by another public road.
The temple owns one parcel of monastic land, covering an area of 1 rai, 2 ngan, and 17 square wah. The structures within the temple include monks' quarters and a sermon hall. The sacred artifacts consist of a principal Buddha image made of brick and stucco.
Wat Tha Thung Luang was built in 2257 B.E. According to historical records and oral traditions passed down by elders, the temple was established approximately 300 years ago during the reign of Queen Chamadevi, the ruler of Lamphun. It was originally known as "Wat Tong Luang" and underwent significant renovations in 2257 B.E.
The temple's administrative history includes several abbots. Phra Athikan Ta Indapanyo served from 2494 to 2498 B.E., followed by Phra Athikan Soi Charuwanno from 2499 to 2506 B.E. Phra Athikan Prasit Paphassaro served from 2507 to 2514 B.E., and Phra Athikan Thawin Thammacharo from 2519 to 2525 B.E. Phra Athikan Sriphan Sirimongkolo began his tenure in 2529 B.E., and the current abbot is Phra Athikan Yuthana Thitapalo.
