Wat Chulamani is located in Ban Wat Chulamani on the east bank of the Nan River, Tha Thong Subdistrict, Mueang District, Phitsanulok Province. It is a historically and religiously significant ancient site in Thailand. The temple predates the Sukhothai period and reflects the splendor of Thai art and architecture of the past. It is also a center for learning about religion and culture, making it a must-visit for tourists and history enthusiasts.

Wat Chulamani is historically notable because King Boromtrailokkanat once resided here to ordain as a monk in 1464 B.E. (2007 BE seems to be a typo in Thai text; historically it should refer to 1464 B.E.) for 8 months and 15 days. During this period, 2,348 royal attendants also ordained alongside him. This event underscores the temple’s importance as a religious and political center at the time. The temple also features several significant ancient structures, particularly the prang (tower) with a base measuring 11 meters wide and 18 meters long, built from laterite. The front of the prang is designed in a tri-directional (trimukha) style, resting on three stacked tiers, each corner indented at a twenty-degree angle, with intricately carved stucco decorations, especially on the fascia and decorative moldings featuring swan motifs. The architectural style closely resembles the prang at Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat in Lopburi, showcasing the elegance and craftsmanship of ancient Thai art.

Historically, Wat Chulamani was also surrounded by a city wall, symbolizing its prominence and significance as a religious and social center. Nearby, there is a replica of the Buddha’s footprint built under the royal command of King Narai the Great. An inscription at the base records that in 2221 B.E., King Narai granted permission to carve the Buddha’s footprint onto a stone slab so that the public could venerate it. This highlights the intertwining of history, faith, and Thai cultural traditions.

Wat Chulamani serves not only as a religious center but also as a learning site for Thai architecture and ancient arts. The prang and the replica Buddha footprint within the temple reflect the exquisite craftsmanship of Thai artisans of the past. Visiting the temple allows visitors to closely experience ancient Thai art. Beyond its architectural beauty, the temple grounds offer a peaceful and shaded environment suitable for meditation, prayer, and relaxation.

Today, Wat Chulamani continues to be an important site for religious activities and Buddhist ceremonies, including merit-making, chanting, and special events on important religious days. Preserving these traditions not only maintains the temple’s sacredness and historical prominence but also allows locals and tourists to learn about and experience authentic Thai culture.

For travelers, Wat Chulamani is conveniently located in the heart of Phitsanulok city near the Nan River, allowing easy access to other nearby attractions such as folk museums, historical sites, and other important temples. Visiting the temple offers a genuine cultural experience, encompassing architecture, history, and devotion.

Wat Chulamani also symbolizes the religious and cultural prosperity of ancient Thailand. Learning about its history provides insight into the faith, beliefs, and creativity of the Thai people in the past—from constructing prangs and mandapas to organizing religious ceremonies reflecting the sacredness and societal prosperity of the time. Visiting Wat Chulamani is not just tourism; it is an opportunity to study and immerse oneself in Thai culture.

The temple continues to play a role as a spiritual center for the community and as a place to learn about Thai art. Preserving and restoring its ancient structures, such as the prang and the replica Buddha footprint mandapa, is crucial for maintaining cultural heritage and inspiring new generations to appreciate the value and significance of Thai history. Additionally, organizing religious and cultural activities promotes cultural tourism, making Wat Chulamani one of the most important and unmissable attractions in Phitsanulok.

For those interested in Thai history, ancient Thai art, and Buddhist devotion, Wat Chulamani is an ideal destination. Visiting the temple not only provides cultural and historical experiences but also fosters understanding and a deep connection with Thai identity. It is also a perfect opportunity to enjoy the temple’s serene and shaded environment while admiring the beauty of ancient Thai architecture and the enduring faith preserved within its grounds.
