Wat Pa Klang Thung is a royal-affiliated Buddhist temple under the Maha Nikaya sect, located in Bang Khayaeng Subdistrict, Mueang Pathum Thani District, Pathum Thani Province. Covering an area of approximately 32 rai, 3 ngan, and 60 square wah, this historic temple reflects the cultural heritage, architectural identity, and traditional way of life of communities along the Chao Phraya River.

The temple is believed to have been established around 1842 during the reign of King Rama III. Originally known as “Wat Pa Tai,” another nearby temple named “Wat Klang Thung” was later built along the canal. Over time, the two temples were merged, forming what is now known as Wat Pa Klang Thung. The temple received its latest royal boundary consecration (Visungkhamsima) in 1990 after the construction of a new ordination hall was completed in 1987.

The old ordination hall is a masonry structure with a simple open-plan design and a tiled roof without traditional decorative elements such as chofa or bai raka. The front gable features a depiction of Indra riding the Erawan elephant, surrounded by floral motifs and decorated with Benjarong porcelain, a style characteristic of the Rama III period. Door and window frames are adorned with delicate stucco patterns depicting celestial beings.

Inside the old ordination hall are mural paintings illustrating the Ten Jataka Tales and scenes from the life of the Buddha. These murals were created using natural pigments derived from plants and minerals. Although some areas have deteriorated over time, they still retain significant artistic and historical value, offering insight into traditional Thai craftsmanship and religious storytelling.

The new ordination hall, completed in 1987, follows a traditional Thai architectural style with a two-tiered roof. Inside, it houses the principal Buddha image modeled after Phra Phuttha Chinnarat, measuring 40 inches in lap width and 50 inches in height. The serene atmosphere makes it an ideal place for worship and meditation.

The temple grounds also include a large two-story sermon hall built in 2002, used for religious ceremonies and community activities. There is also a shrine dedicated to Guan Yin, reflecting the spiritual diversity and devotion of the local community. Additionally, the temple houses a Buddhist scripture school constructed in a Mon architectural style, highlighting the cultural influences present in the area.

Getting There Wat Pa Klang Thung can be reached from Bangkok via Tiwanon Road or Chaeng Watthana Road toward Pathum Thani Province. From there, continue to Bang Khayaeng Subdistrict. The temple is located close to Pathum Thani city center and can be reached within approximately 30 – 45 minutes by car. Public buses and local transport services are also available.
