Wat Nong Phikun in Kamphaeng Phet Province is an important historical site that reflects the history, culture, and faith of the people of Nakhon Chum and Kamphaeng Phet for centuries. The temple stands out in its architecture, art, and the legends passed down through generations. According to local belief, the temple was built by “Nang Phikun,” the daughter of a wealthy merchant from Ban Pom Setthi. Out of her devotion to Buddhism, she established the temple, and thus the people referred to it as Wat Nong Phikun, named after its founder. The temple is admired for its graceful and delicate characteristics, likened to the gentleness of a woman. Another account suggests that the name derives from the fact that the area was once surrounded by large Phikun trees and ponds, which served as the Uthokasima a sacred water boundary used in Buddhist rituals. Hence, the temple became known as Wat Nong Phikun, a name preserved to this day.

Wat Nong Phikun is located in the southern Aranyik area of Nakhon Chum. Its layout is rectangular, enclosed by moats on all four sides. A distinctive feature of this temple is the mandapa constructed behind the vihara, serving as the principal stupa different from most other temples. The mandapa is square in shape, with a base about 1.5 meters high, designed with indented twelve corners on both the base and structure. The original roof was a spire-shaped mandapa style, built with wooden framing and roofed with hook-shaped terracotta tiles. Inside, it enshrines a large stucco Buddha image. The architectural style resembles that of Wat Si Chum and Wat Trapang Thong Lang in Sukhothai, suggesting that the temple was built in the early 20th Buddhist century. Within the grounds, there is also a large ancient brick-lined pond, believed to be over 700 years old, making it an archaeological treasure of great value.

Another renowned aspect of Wat Nong Phikun is the discovery of ancient amulets known as “Phra Nang Kamphaeng.” These amulets are not only aesthetically exquisite and significant in Buddhist art but are also highly revered and sought after by devotees and collectors. Phra Nang Kamphaeng is believed to possess spiritual power, particularly in charm and popularity, which has contributed to the fame of Kamphaeng Phet for centuries.

Wat Nong Phikun represents the identity of Nakhon Chum and Kamphaeng Phet due to its beauty and unique artistry. It has also been registered as part of the “World Heritage City” under UNESCO’s cultural heritage. Preserving this temple is not only about safeguarding a religious and historical monument but also about maintaining the cultural identity of Kamphaeng Phet for future generations.

Traveling to Wat Nong Phikun is convenient. From Bangkok, head toward Kamphaeng Phet Province. Upon reaching the main intersection in Kamphaeng Phet city, turn right into the town. The temple is located on the right-hand side, directly opposite the Kamphaeng Phet Bus Terminal. Visitors can reach the site either by private car or public bus.

Wat Nong Phikun is truly a destination worth visiting for those who appreciate history, art, culture, and Buddhism. Beyond its beautiful legends, it serves as a cultural heritage site that reflects the prosperity and devotion of past generations, carried forward into the present day.
