The National Artist House in Nan Province is an important cultural learning center dedicated to the life and work of Phor Kru Khamphai Nuping, National Artist of Thailand in Performing Arts (Northern Folk Singing) in 1995. Located at 87 Moo 3, Tha Nao Subdistrict, Phu Phiang District, Nan Province, this house is not only the residence of a renowned folk artist but also a living space for preserving the traditional musical heritage of Lanna culture.

 

Phor Kru Khamphai Nuping was born on 19 May 1954 in Ban Hua Na, Tha Nao Subdistrict, Mueang Nan District, now part of Phu Phiang District. He grew up in a northern Thai environment where folk music and traditional singing were deeply connected to community life, ceremonies, and local celebrations.

 

His journey into northern folk performance began when he studied traditional music under Phor Kru Chailangka Kruasen, National Artist of Thailand in 1987. Khamphai spent 7 years studying Lanna musical traditions and eventually became skilled in khับ so, a traditional northern singing performance involving poetic improvisation and musical storytelling.

 

At only 13 years old, he began accompanying his teacher to perform at ceremonies and festivals across Nan Province. His talent in improvising lyrics and composing traditional melodies quickly gained recognition. In addition to singing, he mastered important northern instruments such as the salo, sor, and pin.

 

By the age of 20, Khamphai established his own folk music troupe and began teaching younger generations. His role therefore extended beyond performance into cultural preservation and education, helping ensure that northern Thai folk music would continue to survive in modern society.

 

Lanna khับ so is a unique performing art that combines music, poetry, storytelling, humor, and verbal improvisation. Performers must possess linguistic skill, creativity, and deep knowledge of local traditions because many performances involve spontaneous responses during live interaction.
