Dong Khoi Cave in Nan Province is a remarkable natural and archaeological attraction consisting of two important caves known as “Tham Phra” and “Tham Sao.” Both caves are surrounded by peaceful forested mountains and contain unique natural formations as well as traces of historical significance. Tham Phra, or “The Buddha Cave,” received its name after explorers discovered a large number of ancient artifacts inside the cave. Because Buddha statues were the most common objects discovered inside, the cave became known as Tham Phra.

 

The most distinctive feature of Tham Phra is its structure of multiple connected chambers. Some entrances are narrow, but they lead into large halls inside the cave. According to local legends, the cave may once have been used as a hiding place during ancient conflicts between regional kingdoms such as Sipsongpanna, Lan Chang, and northern principalities. People escaping war are believed to have hidden inside the cave and left many objects behind.

 

Although historians cannot clearly confirm who these people were or where they came from, the large number of archaeological objects discovered inside the cave reflects the historical importance of the area. Visitors to Tham Phra can experience both natural cave scenery and the mystery of northern Thai historical legends.

 

The second cave, known as “Tham Sao” or “The Pillar Cave,” is famous for its extraordinary beauty. Inside the cave are complex limestone formations, stalactites, and stalagmites in many different shapes. When illuminated with flashlights, the cave walls and mineral surfaces sparkle like diamonds, creating an impressive visual atmosphere.

 

The main highlight of Tham Sao is a naturally formed stone pillar located in the center of one of the cave chambers. The pillar is approximately 5 feet tall and about 1 foot in radius. When light reflects from its surface, it produces shimmering flashes that inspired the name “Tham Sao.” This natural pillar is considered one of the most beautiful features inside the Dong Khoi Cave area.

 

The forests surrounding Dong Khoi Cave remain rich and peaceful. Travelers visiting the caves can enjoy mountain scenery, cool air, and the quiet atmosphere of Nan’s natural environment. During the rainy season and winter, the surrounding forests become especially lush and beautiful.
