Wat Ban Kao is a local temple under the Maha Nikaya sect, located in Phan Thong Subdistrict, Phan Thong District, Chon Buri Province, Thailand. The temple occupies an area of 27 rai, 1 ngan, and 28 square wah, along with 11 additional plots of temple-owned land totaling 435 rai and 16 square wah. It serves as a significant religious and community center in the region. The current abbot is Phra Khru Mongkhon Khantayalangka (Hongs).

Originally, the temple was known as Wat Ban Mon (Mon Village Temple), as it was founded by the Mon people who once settled in the area. It was officially established as a temple in 1852 (B.E. 2395), reflecting its historical roots and importance to the local community. During the era of Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram, around 1941 (B.E. 2484), the temple was renamed Wat Ban Kao (Old Village Temple) to match the name of the subdistrict. This renaming also aligned with the government’s national policy at the time to create a unified Thai identity and reduce the use of ethnic-specific names.

The temple complex contains several key structures that reflect its development over time. The ordination hall (ubosot), built in 1965 (B.E. 2508), is a reinforced concrete structure measuring 8 meters wide and 12 meters long. It is the center of important Buddhist ceremonies such as ordinations and sacred rituals. The sala kan parian (sermon hall) was constructed earlier, in 1958 (B.E. 2501), in a traditional Thai wooden style, measuring 15 meters by 26 meters. It serves as a venue for merit-making ceremonies like kathina, pha pa, and other religious or community gatherings.

The prayer hall, completed in 1990 (B.E. 2533), is a raised wooden building measuring 20 meters by 24 meters, used for chanting, meditation, and religious services. The temple also provides housing for monks with eight kuti (monk residences)  four built entirely of wood and four combining wood and concrete.

Wat Ban Kao is home to several sacred and revered objects, including a replica of Phra Phuttha Sothon, a highly venerated Buddha image, a statue of Phra Sivali, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune, and a statue of Luang Pho Puen, a former abbot remembered for his contributions to the temple’s growth and the local community.

The temple plays a vital role in the spiritual and cultural life of the people of Phan Thong. It serves as a gathering place for religious ceremonies, especially on major Buddhist holidays such as Visakha Bucha Day, Magha Bucha Day, and Asalha Bucha Day, as well as traditional festivals. Through these activities, Wat Ban Kao helps preserve and pass down local customs and values.

With its large plots of temple-owned land, Wat Ban Kao also has the potential to support agricultural and community development projects, generating income to maintain the temple and fund public services. Today, the temple continues to grow as both a religious and educational hub, offering programs such as meditation retreats, youth training camps, and moral development initiatives.

For visitors, Wat Ban Kao offers not only a peaceful spiritual atmosphere but also a chance to learn about the history of the Mon community and the cultural heritage of the region. It remains a cornerstone of faith, tradition, and community in Chon Buri Province, bridging the past and present while continuing to guide future generations.
