Huachiew Chalermprakiet University (Campus Bang Phli)

Huachiew Chalermprakiet University was founded by the Poh Tek Sieng Tung Overseas Chinese Foundation, which is the largest charitable Chinese organization in Thai society. Our constant policy is to support education in order to develop human resources in a project we refer to as “Service to Society and Educational Development”.

 

Huachiew Chalermprakiet University has an institutional history of over fifty years, having a developmental path that can be divided into three periods:

 

1941 C.E. Huachiew Hospital Midwifery School is established with the aim of producing midwifery supervisors; they are to have knowledge and ability in nursing and midwifery, which is to be applied to the benefit of society and nation.

 

1982 C.E. Poh Tek Tung Foundation Committee, conscious of the work of the government in developing the nation in accordance with the 4th National Economic and Social Development Plan (1977-1981 C.E.), expands the former Huachiew Hospital into a general hospital offering curative services and advice to people coming to request services in every medical field, and in addition to this, expands the midwifery school into a nursing college where the Faculty of Nursing teaches a Bachelor of Science program in nursing and midwifery and names the college “Huachiew College”, later opening the Faculty of Social Work, with a Bachelor of Social Work program, as an additional faculty.

 

1990 C.E. is the year the Poh Tek Tung Foundation has been operating for 80 years. The foundation has the constant policy to support and expand the scope of its work in higher education. And to respectfully contribute to royal merit and extol royal honor, humbly recollecting royal great compassion and virtue of the royal pedes of His Majesty the Lord the King and Her Majesty the Lady Sirikit the Queen, the Poh Tek Tung Foundation has a resolution to elevate the status of Huachiew College to that of “University” and receives approval from the University Bureau for its foundation as a university and receives royal great compassion and virtue in the graciously conferred title of “Huachiew Chalermprakiet University” on the 11th of May 1992, considered as dearly auspicious institution-wise and having significance to Chinese who have entered under the shade of the King’s grace.

 

“Huachiew” means “overseas Chinese” and is the name the foundation uses as the name of the foundation’s hospital and college.

Huachiew Chalermprakiet University was founded under a steadfast resolution by the Poh Tek Sieng Tung Overseas Chinese Foundation, or the Poh Tek Tung Foundation – a foundation grateful to His Majesty the King of Thailand for his great mercy and aiming to bring benefit to society through providing opportunities, creating equality at the level of higher education, and promoting a virtuous culture in accordance with a foundation of Buddhism and ancestor worship.

Graduates of the university are to be people of wisdom and virtue, are to be absolute exemplars of intellectuals, ready to devote themselves to social service, for the happiness of global citizens in the four corners of the earth.

 

Vision Huachiew Chalermprakiet University is to be a medium-sized university with academic excellence at an international level that produces university graduates equipped with knowledge and virtue and, at the same time, that develops the quality and enhances the experience among its instructors (the emphasis being on the building of a teaching spirit), builds awareness of the obligation and duty to create harmony and agreement among all members of the institution, and creates awareness, to a good level, of being responsible in relation to all sectors of society; this includes efficient management that accords with the Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy.

 

Uniqueness 1.   Adhering to the 6 virtues of diligence, perseverance, frugality, compassion, honesty, and filial piety.  2.   Practising the 3 tenants of the Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy: knowing how much is enough, being reasonable, and having immunity. 3.   Studying, so as to be of service to society.

 

An Emphasis on China There are 5 aspects: teaching and learning, research, management, maintenance of Chinese-Thai art and culture, and acting as a source of information on being-of-China.

Symbols of the University:

 

The character in the center of the circle is the logo of the Poh Tek Tung Foundation. It is read as “sieng” and means “immaculate virtue performing good deeds”. In the outer portion of the circle, there is writing in Thai and English naming Huachiew Chalermprakiet University; the writing in Chinese, employing the Teochiew dialect and read as “Hua Kiew Chong Sia Taihak”, has the same meaning as the writing in Thai.

 

Huachiew Chalermprakiet University places strong faith in the use of wisdom for the alleviation of suffering in the world through compassion and mercy and through flawless goodwill free of impurity. The bodhi tree is a symbol of attaining enlightenment, bringing light, purity and peace into the world, as the Buddha became fully enlightened under this tree; of being cognizant of the benefits of the bodhi tree (or of Buddhist precepts); and of being fully aware of the cool shade under the grace of His Majesty the King.

 

Huachiew Chalermprakiet University has designated the bodhi tree the university tree.

 

In order to show awareness of the royal great compassion and virtue of the royal pedes of His Majesty the Lord the King and Her Majesty the Lady Sirikit the Queen towards Thai citizens, Huachiew Chalermprakiet University has constructed a sculpture in the shape of a golden bodhi tree and has placed it in a prominent location in front of the Grand Meeting Hall of the university, naming the sculpture “Praborompotisamparn”, meaning “Royal Protection”.

 

It symbolizes the royal great compassion and virtue of His Majesty the King in overseeing and protecting the country, bringing peace and happiness to Thai citizens and foreigners, in particular immigrant Chinese relying on royal charisma, building homes and establishing solid careers in Thailand since long ago.

 

Huachiew Chalermprakiet University has a firm belief that this sculpture “Praborompotisamparn” shall be a monument to the devotion and loyalty of every group of citizens to His Majesty the Thai King, holder of the ten virtues incumbent on a ruler, now and for always. HCU Color : Yellow gold.
