Luang Pho Pan Worship Festival in Samut Prakan is one of the most meaningful local traditions of Bang Bo District. Centered around Wat Mongkol Kothawas in Khlong Dan Subdistrict, this annual event is held on the waxing 8th day of the 12th lunar month and usually continues for 2–3 days. It is not simply a temple fair. It is a community tradition built on faith, memory, and local identity, created to honor the life and virtues of Luang Pho Pan, one of the most respected monks in the area.

The festival has long been supported by people from all 8 subdistricts of Bang Bo. Local residents, temples, schools, and public agencies come together each year to preserve this important tradition. For the community, the event is both a religious gathering and a cultural expression of unity. It reflects how faith in Luang Pho Pan remains deeply rooted in the hearts of local people.

Luang Pho Pan, formally known as Phra Khru Phiphat Nirothakit, was the former abbot of Wat Mongkol Kothawas. He was born in the old Bang Hia area, now Khlong Dan, in Samut Prakan. His father was Chinese, and his mother was a Thai woman named Tan. He was first ordained as a novice at Wat Arun Ratchawararam in Bangkok and later returned to become an influential monk at Wat Mongkol Kothawas, where he helped shape the temple into a major spiritual center for the district.

Luang Pho Pan became widely known as a revered meditation master and amulet monk. He was remembered for his compassion, spiritual authority, and the sacred reputation of his blessed objects. Even today, many local people affectionately call him Luang Pu Pan, a name that reflects personal devotion rather than mere historical respect. In Khlong Dan and Bang Bo, he is still regarded as a source of protection, merit, and emotional strength.

That is why the Luang Pho Pan Worship Festival carries far more weight than a typical annual fair. It is a tradition of remembrance. People gather not only to make merit but also to honor the moral example, kindness, and enduring spiritual presence of Luang Pho Pan. For many families, attending the festival is an act of continuity between generations.

Historically, the festival began at Wat Mongkol Kothawas 1–2 days before the main gathering. Then, in the early morning, a statue of Luang Pho Pan would be ceremonially placed on a boat and paraded along Khlong Dan Canal. Beautifully decorated boats accompanied the procession, creating one of the most memorable scenes associated with this festival. The image of Luang Pho Pan traveling by water remains one of the strongest cultural symbols of the event.

After the procession, the statue would be welcomed at the Bang Bo District Office, where a ceremonial pavilion was prepared for public worship. This marked the beginning of the main celebrations. Devotees could pay respect, apply gold leaf to the image of Luang Pho Pan, and join the broader festivities that took place both during the day and throughout the night.

Boat racing has always been one of the major highlights. More than sport, the long-boat races represent the river-based heritage of the district and the bond between neighboring communities. Because Bang Bo and Khlong Dan developed along waterways, boat racing naturally became part of the festival’s identity. It preserves both local skill and local memory.

In the evening, the festival traditionally turned into a lively celebration filled with temple-fair entertainment. Performances such as likay, live music, films, and local shows brought crowds together until dawn. In earlier times, the entire event lasted only 1 day and 1 night. Today, the celebration generally runs longer, usually 2–3 days, allowing more people to participate and expanding the range of activities.

One of the festival’s old-time attractions was a local pastime known as “Joke”. It used to be a well-known feature of the Luang Pho Pan fair and drew plenty of attention from local visitors. Although it is no longer a regular part of the event today, it still survives in local memory as part of the festival’s unique atmosphere and social history.

Another important aspect of the festival is the sale of local products. Among the most recognizable items is dried snakehead fish, one of Bang Bo’s best-known local specialties. This gives the event an additional layer of cultural value. The festival is not disconnected from everyday life. Instead, it brings together faith, local economy, food culture, and community identity in one shared space.

For visitors, the festival offers a rich cultural experience. It combines devotion, riverside heritage, traditional entertainment, local food, and small-town warmth. Unlike heavily commercialized events, the Luang Pho Pan Worship Festival still feels rooted in its community. That is what makes it special. It is a living tradition rather than a staged performance.

Even outside the annual festival period, Wat Mongkol Kothawas remains a meaningful place to visit. Devotees continue to come throughout the year to pay respect to Luang Pho Pan, make merit, and learn more about the temple’s history. The temple setting is peaceful, and its connection with Khlong Dan’s religious heritage remains strong.

Getting There is relatively convenient from Bangkok. Travelers can drive via Sukhumvit Road or Bang Na–Trat Road toward Bang Bo District, then continue to Khlong Dan and Wat Mongkol Kothawas. Private transport is the easiest option during the festival period, especially for those who also want to explore the canal community, nearby temples, local markets, and coastal viewpoints around Khlong Dan.
