Wat Sawang Arom Nestled amidst the serene mangrove forests at the mouth of Khlong Dan in Bang Bo District, Samut Prakan Province, lies an ancient temple rich in history and spirituality—Wat Sawang Arom, fondly known by locals as "Wat Lang" or "Wat Ban Lang."
A Journey Through Time: From Humble Beginnings to Enduring Faith Wat Sawang Arom was officially established in 1909 during the era of Phra Khru Phiphat Nirotkij (Phan), a renowned monk from Wat Bang Hie Nok (now Wat Mongkhon Kotthawas), who often meditated in the area. Over time, the site was developed into a temple and granted royal recognition.
At one point, the temple faced severe challenges when rising sea levels submerged the old ordination hall, leaving it abandoned. The structure, surrounded by mangroves and filled with muddy terrain, became almost invisible, leading to its long period of neglect until a significant restoration began in 1957.
In 2009, to commemorate the temple's 100th anniversary, an extensive restoration project was undertaken. The old ordination hall was meticulously cleaned and restored, with mud and overgrown vegetation carefully removed. Concrete was poured to fortify the base, and steel reinforcements were added to secure the structure.
As part of the renovation, a replica monk's residence was constructed, and a statue of Phra Khru Phiphat Nirotkij was cast to serve as a focal point of reverence for devotees.
Another highlight of Wat Sawang Arom is the discovery of an ancient carved stone tiger, believed to be the inspiration for the tiger amulets associated with Phra Khru Phiphat Nirotkij of Bang Hie. The carved tiger was placed atop a cement tiger statue and later encased within a 100-inch-high bronze tiger statue, creating a monumental symbol of spiritual power and unwavering faith.
Today, Wat Sawang Arom serves not only as a religious sanctuary but also as a cultural and historical learning center for the Khlong Dan community. The preservation and restoration efforts reflect a profound connection between the past and the present.
Thanks to the dedication of the community and caretakers, Wat Sawang Arom continues to stand as a vital spiritual center, a hub of faith for the people of Khlong Dan, and a cultural heritage site for future generations.
Wat Sawang Arom is more than just a place of worship; it is a living narrative of the past, inspiring the community with its enduring spirit and bridging the way to a brighter, more connected future.
