Wat Rat Burana (Wat Bang Pla) is a historic Buddhist temple located in Bang Pla Subdistrict, Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan Province. With a history spanning more than a century, the temple has long served as a spiritual, educational, and community center for local residents. It reflects the traditional Thai way of life where temples play a central role in both religious practice and community development.

 

The temple was established around 1882 by Mr. Chan Chantra. It was originally named “Wat Bang Lao,” based on the name of the local area at that time. The first abbot was Luang Pho Lao, a wandering monk from southern Thailand who settled in this area and became a spiritual leader for the community. Over time, local villagers came together to formally build and develop the temple.

 

In 1940, after extensive restoration and community involvement, the temple was renamed “Wat Rat Burana,” which reflects the collective effort of the people in rebuilding and maintaining the temple. The temple received its first royal boundary (Wisungkhamsima) in 1888 and was granted it again on February 22, 1960, confirming its official status as a Buddhist temple.

 

Wat Rat Burana has also played an important role in education. Since 1956, the temple has offered Buddhist scripture studies and supported public education by providing space for local schools. Additionally, it contributed land for a health station and an early childhood education center, further strengthening its role as a community hub.

 

The temple covers approximately 32 rai of flat land and is conveniently accessible by both road and water. It is located near Bang Pla Canal, which historically served as an important transportation route. Inside the temple grounds, visitors will find traditional monastic buildings, including the ordination hall, sermon hall, monk residences, and spaces for religious and community activities.

 

The atmosphere is peaceful and suitable for making merit, paying respect to Buddha images, and practicing meditation. Visitors can experience the authentic local lifestyle and the deep-rooted faith of the community in Thai Buddhism.
