Wat Khao Kaew Chai Mongkhon is located at 64/2, Moo 11, Khao Kaew Srisomboon Subdistrict, Thung Saliam District, Sukhothai Province, situated atop a mixed soil and rock hill, covering a total area of 26 rai. Originally, this area was rich in teak and other mixed hardwood forests, historically known as “Pa Dong Kha.” The first settlers were people from Thoen District, Lampang Province, who migrated here to establish their community and livelihood, followed by additional groups over time. Recognizing the need for a religious center, the villagers invited Phra Athikan Ma Kaew from Wat Lao Noi, Thoen District, Lampang Province, to serve as the founding abbot in 1939, establishing the temple initially under the name “Wat Wang Tong Doi.”
In 1948, Phra Kru Wimon Priyatikan, abbot of Wat Den Kaew in Thoen District, Lampang Province, undertook major renovations and renamed the temple “Wat Khao Kaew Chai Mongkhon.” The name was inspired by the abundant crystalline rocks scattered across the hilltop, forming rectangular and hexagonal shapes. In 1949, Luang Pu Kruba Inthanit (Phra Kruba Buppharattanachai) became the abbot, further restoring and developing the temple. Over time, the temple expanded to include a vihara, ubosot, stupa, sermon hall, and a hall housing the Buddha’s relics. Wat Khao Kaew Chai Mongkhon has been granted the Wisungkhamasima, the official recognition of consecrated temple grounds, and is currently led by Phra Samuh Phuthai Phapakaro as abbot.
The temple has played a significant role in community development and Buddhist education. In 1975, it served as the local public training center for Khao Kaew Srisomboon Subdistrict. In 2003, it was selected as an Educational Temple Park by the National Office of Buddhism and established a Dharma dissemination center for Thung Saliam District. In 2007, the temple was recognized as a model temple by the National Office of Buddhism and also designated as a Thai Cultural Center strengthening community ties. In 2008, it opened a Sunday Buddhist study center for children and local residents to provide continuous religious education.
Wat Khao Kaew Chai Mongkhon houses several sacred and significant Buddha images and religious artifacts. These include a stupa enshrining Buddha’s relics, the principal Buddha image in the ubosot, Luang Pho Phra Chao Ton Luang, a wooden likeness of Kruba Chao Srivichai carved from jackfruit wood, and a statue of Kruba Chao Inthanit, the temple’s founding master. These sacred objects are central to the spiritual life of the community and attract devotees from near and far.
With its long history, Wat Khao Kaew Chai Mongkhon is not only a center for religious ceremonies and meditation but also plays a crucial role in education, social development, and the preservation of Thai culture. Its hilltop location offers serene landscapes and panoramic views, providing a peaceful environment for worship, reflection, and relaxation. Today, the temple stands as one of Sukhothai’s most significant religious and cultural landmarks, representing a blend of historical heritage, spiritual importance, and community engagement.
