Wat Sa Song Phi Nong, also known in some sources as the Sa Song Phi Nong Monastery, is an important religious site located on Khao Samo Khaeng. According to historical records, particularly from the book on the construction of Phra Borom That Chedi Si Boworn Chinarat, the proper name is Sa Song Phi Nong Monastery. This monastery holds significant historical value, having been established during the reign of King Naresuan the Great, and it continues to be a spiritual center for local Buddhists.

Khao Samo Khaeng originally hosted seven ancient temples, but today only four remain: Wat Trapang Nak, Sa Song Phi Nong Monastery, Wat Phra Phutthabat Khao Samo Khaeng, and Wat Ratchakee Hiranyaram, along with an abandoned temple at the summit. The hill also features the Si Tai Huk Tung Shrine, a Mahayana Chinese temple that was formerly the Shrine of Phor Heng Chia, reflecting the cultural and religious diversity of the area.

Due to the number of temples on Khao Samo Khaeng, there has often been confusion regarding historical structures and artifacts. For example, the three-meter-tall white jade statue of Guan Yin is sometimes mistakenly said to be at Wat Khao Samo Khaeng, when in fact it is housed at Wat Ratchakee Hiranyaram. Similarly, the single-spire chedi at the summit is often incorrectly associated with Wat Khao Samo Khaeng, although it is actually closer to Sa Song Phi Nong Monastery.

The monastery is conveniently located not far from Wat Ratchakee Hiranyaram, as Khao Samo Khaeng is not a large mountain. The proximity of these temples allows visitors to easily explore the area and gain insight into the historical and cultural significance of each site.

Sa Song Phi Nong Monastery is not only historically important but also serves as a spiritual and cultural hub for local Buddhists. Religious ceremonies, merit-making activities, and the veneration of Buddha images within the monastery demonstrate the community’s deep connection to this sacred place.

With its rich history, artistic heritage, religious diversity, and spiritual significance, Sa Song Phi Nong Monastery is a compelling destination for those interested in Thai history, culture, and Buddhist traditions. Visiting the monastery offers a unique opportunity to explore Thailand’s historical and spiritual landscape while gaining a deeper understanding of local beliefs and customs.
