Wat Tamnak is a local Buddhist temple under the Maha Nikaya order, located along the Chao Phraya River in Sam Khok Subdistrict, Sam Khok District, Pathum Thani Province. It is one of the old riverside temples that reflects the historical identity of Sam Khok very clearly, especially in connection with the Mon community that settled in this part of Pathum Thani. For travelers looking for an old temple near Bangkok with both heritage value and a peaceful atmosphere, Wat Tamnak is a rewarding stop.

What makes this temple especially interesting is the way its history, architecture, and riverside setting come together. Wat Tamnak is not a large tourist-heavy complex, but that is exactly part of its appeal. It offers a more grounded and authentic experience, where visitors can appreciate local religious life, old temple design, and the slower rhythm of a traditional river community.

The temple dates back to 1809, during the reign of King Rama II, and was established by Mon migrants from Mottama. It was originally called “Wat Phae Pha Tae,” meaning “Temple of the Buddha Footprint.” In earlier periods, it was also known as Wat Khom and Wat Yai. The current name, Wat Tamnak, is closely associated with the belief that King Rama III once stopped and stayed at a royal pavilion in the temple area when visiting Sam Khok.

One of the strongest architectural highlights of Wat Tamnak is its ordination hall, which is shaped like a Chinese junk boat. The hall measures about 7 meters wide and 24 meters long, has no windows, and uses a distinctive door arrangement with one door at the front and two at the back. This unusual design gives the temple a memorable visual identity and reflects the long connection between river culture and temple construction in central Thailand.

In front of the ordination hall stand two medium-sized twelve-cornered chedis, adding balance and elegance to the temple grounds. Other important structures include a prayer hall, sermon hall, pavilion, and monks’ residences. Although the temple is historic, it remains an active religious site rather than a preserved monument without daily use.

The temple’s sacred objects are also important. Inside the ordination hall is the principal Buddha image made of laterite, with a lap width of two sok. The temple also houses a stone replica of the Buddha’s footprint, measuring one sok wide and three sok long. These objects make Wat Tamnak especially meaningful for visitors who enjoy combining temple visits with merit-making and historical interest.

The atmosphere at Wat Tamnak is calm and distinctly tied to the Chao Phraya River. The riverside location gives the temple a gentle openness, and the surrounding Sam Khok area still retains traces of its old community character. This makes the temple suitable not only for religious visits but also for travelers who enjoy quiet cultural routes, old architecture, and riverside photography.

Wat Tamnak also works very well as part of a wider Sam Khok temple trip. Nearby places such as Wat Sing, Wat Chankapho, Wat Bot, and local river markets can easily be combined into the same day. That makes this temple useful not just as a single destination, but as a key stop in a broader cultural itinerary through Pathum Thani.

Getting There is easiest by private car from Bangkok via the Pathum Thani–Sam Khok route. From there, continue into Sam Khok Subdistrict and follow navigation directly to the temple. Because the temple sits close to other cultural sites in the district, it is especially convenient for a one-day temple-hopping route.

For the best visiting experience, allow time to walk around the ordination hall, the front chedis, and the river-facing temple area. Morning and late afternoon are especially pleasant for both sightseeing and photography. The temple remains active for worship, meditation, and Buddhist activities, so visitors should dress respectfully and keep the atmosphere calm while exploring the grounds.
