Nurul Islam Mosque (Surao Khiao) in Nonthaburi Province is a significant Islamic center that serves both as a mosque and a religious educational institution. Established in 1973, it continues to play an important role in preserving Islamic teachings and strengthening the local Muslim community.
The mosque was founded by the late Imam Ahmad Charoensuk, a key figure in developing the Surao Khiao community. In its early days, the ground floor of the mosque was used as a classroom where children were taught to read the Quran and study Malay-language texts.
With a strong vision for education, Imam Ahmad dedicated 7 rai of his land for public benefit, allowing the construction of school buildings and facilities. This marked the beginning of Nurul Islam as an educational center for Islamic studies in Nonthaburi.
He also invested in human development by sending his two sons, Imam Sukor Charoensuk and Ajarn Hambali Charoensuk, to study at Ma’saohatuddeen School under the late Ajarn Abideen Wittayanon. This institution was well known for its Islamic education.
After completing his studies, Imam Sukor continued his education in southern Thailand before traveling to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, Ajarn Hambali pursued further studies in Cairo, Egypt, and Madinah, Saudi Arabia, gaining knowledge from some of the most respected Islamic centers in the world.
Upon returning, Imam Abdus Sukor Charoensuk continued his father’s mission by establishing structured religious education, including daytime and evening classes, as well as adult education every Friday. The school gradually expanded into a full pondok-style institution.
As student numbers increased, the institution developed further with the construction of concrete school buildings and dormitories, supported by donations from the community and believers.
Ajarn Hambali later returned to join the teaching staff, strengthening both academic and religious education. Today, the mosque remains a central institution for Islamic learning in the region.
The atmosphere around the mosque is peaceful and reflects traditional Muslim community life, making it an important cultural and religious landmark.
