Wat Phra Pathom Chedi Ratchaworamahawihan is a first-class royal temple of the ratchaworamahawihan grade, located in the heart of Nakhon Pathom Province. Within the temple stands “Phra Pathom Chedi,” which is recognized as the largest stupa in Thailand. It is also an important symbol of Nakhon Pathom Province, reflecting the flourishing of Buddhism in the land of Suvarnabhumi.

 

The Phra Pathom Chedi seen today was restored and newly built to cover the original ancient chedi during the reign of King Mongkut, Rama IV, in 1853. He ordered the construction of a new outer structure to enclose the original monument, which had an inverted-bowl-shaped base and a prang-like spire on top. This earlier form is believed to date back to the beginning of the 4th Buddhist century and is associated with Dvaravati civilization.

 

Historically, Phra Pathom Chedi is regarded as important evidence of the arrival of Buddhism in this region. In the past, the Nakhon Pathom area was the center of the ancient city of Nakhon Chai Si, one of the major urban centers of the Dvaravati period. The discovery of many archaeological objects, such as Buddha images, votive tablets, and various art objects, helps confirm the prosperity of religion and culture in this area.

 

The present architectural form of Phra Pathom Chedi is a massive bell-shaped stupa covered entirely with golden tiles. It stands about 120 meters high, making it clearly visible from a great distance. The grandeur of the chedi reflects not only artistic beauty, but also the deep devotion of Buddhists to their faith.

 

The restoration of Phra Pathom Chedi during the reign of Rama IV marked a major turning point that brought the monument back as a religious center once again. Previously abandoned over time, it was revived under royal initiative through the construction of a new outer structure that preserved the ancient monument inside. As a result, Phra Pathom Chedi became both an archaeological monument and one of the most important religious sites in the country.

 

The atmosphere inside Wat Phra Pathom Chedi is peaceful and sacred. Around the main chedi is a wide courtyard where people can walk in worship and perform candlelit circumambulation. There are assembly halls, pavilions, and various buildings used for religious activities. Visitors can experience a blend of historical antiquity and living religious tradition that continues to this day.

 

One of the important activities regularly held here is candlelit circumambulation on major Buddhist holy days, as well as the annual Phra Pathom Chedi worship festival. This is considered one of the largest events in Nakhon Pathom Province and attracts large numbers of people from across the country.

 

For travelers, Phra Pathom Chedi is a destination that can be visited throughout the year, especially in the morning and evening when the atmosphere is cooler and more pleasant for walking around the grounds. Sunlight falling on the chedi makes its golden surface stand out even more beautifully.

 

Getting There Wat Phra Pathom Chedi Ratchaworamahawihan is easy to reach by both private car and public transportation. Visitors can use Phet Kasem Road to enter Nakhon Pathom town. If traveling by train, get off at Nakhon Pathom Railway Station and continue to the temple by local transport or taxi, as it is not far away.
