Mae Nam Chan is one of the important rivers in Chiang Rai Province, Northern Thailand. It originates from the Sam Sao mountain range in Mae Chan District, near the border with Shan State, Myanmar, and flows eastward and northeastward before joining the Mekong River via the Ing basin system.

 

The river stretches approximately 100 kilometers and plays a crucial role in supporting local agriculture, especially rice farming in Mae Chan and Chiang Saen districts. Despite its relatively modest size, Mae Nam Chan remains one of the key water sources for local communities.

 

The river’s flow direction is particularly interesting. Unlike most rivers in Thailand, rivers in Chiang Rai generally flow northward or northeastward due to the surrounding mountain ranges in the south, west, and east. These natural barriers force water to drain into the Mekong Basin, making this region geographically unique.

 

Along its course, small weirs and irrigation systems have been built by local farmers, particularly in Pa Tueng Subdistrict, to manage water resources effectively. These structures reflect the community’s adaptation to the environment and their reliance on the river.

 

The lower section of Mae Nam Chan, where it joins Mae Nam Kham before reaching the Mekong River in Chiang Saen District, is especially significant. This area is close to major attractions like the Golden Triangle and offers scenic views of northern Thailand’s river landscapes.

 

Getting There Travelers can start from Chiang Rai city and take Highway 1 (Phahonyothin Road) toward Mae Chan District. From there, continue to Chiang Saen to reach the river’s lower basin, where it connects to the Mekong River.
