Wat Phra Singh Chiang Rai is located on Tha Luang Road near the Chiang Rai Provincial Hall. It is one of the most important temples in Chiang Rai, playing a significant role in history, art, and religion. This temple is directly associated with the Phra Buddha Sihing, a highly revered Buddha image regarded as a sacred symbol of the Lanna Kingdom, which is currently enshrined at the Lai Kham Viharn, Wat Phra Singh in Chiang Mai.

 

Wat Phra Singh in Chiang Rai is not just an ordinary city temple, but a historical center that reflects the transformation of power, politics, and faith in the ancient Lanna Kingdom. This is especially evident during the reigns of King Kue Na and King Saen Mueang Ma, when significant movements of sacred Buddha images and political conflicts between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai took place.

 

According to historical accounts, Chao Mahaprom, the younger brother of King Kue Na of Chiang Mai, brought the Phra Buddha Sihing from Kamphaeng Phet. King Kue Na later enshrined the sacred Buddha image in Chiang Mai. Subsequently, Chao Mahaprom requested to bring the Buddha image to Chiang Rai in order to create a replica, reflecting its importance as a spiritual center for the people of the Lanna region.

 

After the passing of King Kue Na and King Saen Mueang Ma, political conflict arose. King Saen Mueang Ma ascended the throne of Chiang Mai, while Chao Mahaprom attempted to seize power by marching an army from Chiang Rai. However, the attempt failed, and the Chiang Mai forces retaliated and pursued him back to Chiang Rai. During this event, the Phra Buddha Sihing was returned to Chiang Mai, where it has remained ever since.

 

This historical episode not only reflects political struggles but also demonstrates the belief that the Phra Buddha Sihing symbolized legitimacy and authority of rulers, making Wat Phra Singh Chiang Rai an important site in regional history.

 

Inside the temple, visitors can find a replica Buddha footprint carved on stone, believed to date back to the era of King Mengrai, the founder of Chiang Rai. This serves as evidence of long-standing Buddhist devotion and the flourishing of Lanna art in the past.

 

Another highlight of the temple is its artistic elements, especially the viharn doors designed by National Artist Thawan Duchanee. The designs represent the four elements—earth, water, wind, and fire—expressed through unique and meaningful patterns. The carving work was executed by local artisan Sala Amnuay Bua-ngam, adding both artistic and spiritual value to the temple.

 

The atmosphere within the temple is peaceful and serene, making it ideal for merit-making, worship, and relaxation. Visitors can experience the simplicity of a city temple that still preserves the distinct identity of Lanna culture.
