Wat Santikaram is located in Moo 6, Ban Pho Thale, Phra Khao Subdistrict, Bang Ban District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. It is a local temple under the Mahanikaya order with a long history dating back to the Ayutthaya period. The temple has played an important role in the way of life of people in Phra Khao Subdistrict for generations, serving as a center for religious practice, belief, and community activities.

According to historical records, Wat Santikaram was established around 2270 BE and was originally known as “Wat Sikhot.” The temple was later renamed “Wat Santikaram” in 1954, reflecting an adjustment in its role and image to align with social changes in the modern era. The temple was granted Wisungkhamsima in 2277 BE, indicating its officially recognized status since the late Ayutthaya period.

The temple covers an area of approximately 20 rai, making it a relatively spacious community temple. The layout is simple yet complete, consisting of key religious structures such as a brick-and-mortar ubosot measuring about 10 meters wide and 20 meters long, a sermon hall measuring 10 meters wide and 15 meters long, and a chanting hall. These structures reflect the practical design of community temples in Thailand’s central plains.

The most important sacred object of the temple is the principal Buddha image known locally as “Luang Pho Khao.” The image measures about 4 cubits in width at the lap and 5 cubits in height. Luang Pho Khao serves as the spiritual center of Ban Pho Thale and Phra Khao Subdistrict, with local residents commonly paying respect and praying for peace, harmony, and good fortune, especially before starting new endeavors or during important family occasions.

Although the name “Luang Pho Khao” can be found in several nearby temples, in the context of Wat Santikaram it carries a distinct meaning as a symbol of peace, in harmony with the temple’s name. The renaming of the temple from Wat Sikhot to Wat Santikaram further reinforces its role as a place of inner calm and communal harmony.

In terms of its social role, Wat Santikaram continues to function as a center for religious activities and traditional ceremonies within the community. Common merit-making events at community temples include Kathin ceremonies, Pha Pa ceremonies, and observances on important Buddhist holy days, as well as local merit-making activities organized by villagers. While these events are not held on a large tourist-oriented scale, they clearly reflect the strong bond between the temple and the community.

The overall atmosphere of Wat Santikaram is calm, simple, and welcoming, making it suitable for visitors seeking merit-making, worship, or quiet reflection. Located outside Ayutthaya Island, the temple offers visitors a glimpse of Ayutthaya through the lens of rural community life, where traditional rhythms and values are still well preserved.

Getting There: Traveling to Wat Santikaram is most convenient by private car. Visitors can use a navigation app and pin “Wat Santikaram, Bang Ban.” From Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya city, head toward Bang Ban District and then enter Phra Khao Subdistrict. The temple is located in Moo 6, Ban Pho Thale. The route is relatively straightforward and allows visitors to plan a one-day trip combining nearby temples and communities in Phra Khao Subdistrict.

Visitors are advised to dress modestly, respect the temple grounds, and avoid making loud noises during religious activities.
