Wat Phra Khao is located in Moo 3, Ban Phra Khao, Phra Khao Subdistrict, Bang Ban District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. It is a local temple under the Mahanikaya order with a long history dating back to the Ayutthaya period. Although it is not a large or famous tourist temple, it is a deeply rooted community temple closely connected to the religious life, beliefs, and collective memories of the people of Phra Khao Subdistrict over many generations.

 

According to historical records, Wat Phra Khao was established around 2250 BE during the late Ayutthaya period and was officially granted Wisungkhamsima on 27 September 1927. This reflects the continuous existence of the temple through different eras, from the late Ayutthaya period through the Rattanakosin era to the present day, where it continues to serve as an active community temple.

 

The temple covers an area of approximately 17 rai and 2 ngan. Although not large in size, the temple layout is well organized. The compound includes an ubosot measuring approximately 7 meters wide and 11 meters long, a sermon hall measuring 10 meters wide and 20 meters long, and a chanting hall, reflecting the practical design of community temples in Thailand’s central plains that prioritize everyday religious use over monumental grandeur.

 

The most important sacred object of the temple is the principal Buddha image known locally as “Luang Pho Khao.” The image measures about 4 cubits in width at the lap and 5 cubits in height and has long served as the spiritual center of the community. Luang Pho Khao is not only the main Buddha image of the ubosot but also a symbol of faith for the people of Phra Khao Subdistrict, especially for prayers seeking peace, harmony, and stability in life.

 

The names of the temple and the village, “Phra Khao,” clearly reflect the close relationship between the temple and the community. The temple is not merely located within the village but functions as a cultural and spiritual center that has shaped the local identity. The name of Luang Pho Khao, the temple, and the community are all interconnected within the shared memory of the Bang Ban area.

 

In terms of its social role, Wat Phra Khao serves as a venue for religious ceremonies, merit-making activities, and community events on a regular basis. Important religious occasions commonly associated with community temples include Kathin ceremonies, Pha Pa ceremonies, and merit-making rituals during Buddhist festivals. Although these events are not organized on a large tourist-oriented scale, they reflect genuine cooperation and strong social bonds within the local community.

Visitors can use a navigation app and pin “Wat Phra Khao, Bang Ban.” From Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya city, head toward Bang Ban District and enter Phra Khao Subdistrict. The temple is located in Moo 3, Ban Phra Khao. The route is relatively straightforward and suitable for combining visits to nearby temples and communities within a single day.

 

Visitors are advised to dress modestly, keep noise to a minimum, and respect areas used for religious activities.
