Wat Nang Cham is a temple under the Mahanikaya sect of Theravada Buddhism, located in Khlong Khanak, Wiset Chai Chan District, Ang Thong Province. It is currently led by Phra Maha Phaitoon Chantako, the abbot. This temple is not only significant as a religious center but also deeply connected to the local history and the lives of the community members over many years.
Wat Nang Cham was founded on April 15, 1837 (B.E. 2380) at the confluence of two canals. According to local legends, the area where the temple now stands was once a bustling market along the canal. A merchant, selling general goods, anchored her boat here and lived on the boat for many years. Over time, the sand deposits in the canal formed into a small landmass where the temple was later built. Originally named "Wat Nithra Mae Kha Cham" (Temple of the Sleeping General Merchant), it was eventually renamed "Wat Nang Cham." The temple was granted the official status of a temple with consecrated boundaries on April 1, 1851 (B.E. 2394), marking its importance as a religious institution.
One of the notable features of Wat Nang Cham is the construction of 109 large Buddha statues surrounding the ordination hall (ubosot). These statues, in the Bhumisparsha mudra (calling the earth to witness), stand 1.5 meters wide and 2 meters tall, adorned in golden yellow. The bases of the statues are surrounded by lotus petals, symbolizing purity and the completeness of Buddha’s teachings. These Buddha statues serve not only as objects of veneration but also as places to enshrine the ashes of the deceased, offering a unique alternative to traditional stupas. This makes the temple a central place of reverence and remembrance for the local community.
Wat Nang Cham plays a vital role in the lives of the people of Khlong Khanak, acting as a spiritual hub that strengthens the bonds between community members. The temple hosts various religious and cultural events, helping to promote faith in Buddhism and moral principles. It also serves as the venue for significant rites of passage such as ordinations, funerals, and other ceremonies central to the way of life of the local people.
The temple continues to undergo development, with ongoing projects to enhance its beauty and maintain its facilities. These include constructing additional Buddha statues, restoring the temple’s buildings, and maintaining the grounds. This reflects the community's dedication to preserving and promoting the cultural and religious heritage of the area.
Wat Nang Cham remains a revered religious site and an important cultural learning center, drawing not only locals but also those interested in experiencing the faith, history, and traditions of this unique community.
