Wat Obthom is an important temple located at 21 Ban Obthom, Moo 5, Yilun Subdistrict, Wiset Chai Chan District, Ang Thong Province. Affiliated with the Maha Nikaya sect, this temple holds significant importance in the area, encompassing a total area of 19 rai, 3 ngan, and 95 square wah. The temple is situated on flat, low-lying land, which is ideal for creating beautiful and meaningful religious architecture.
Wat Obthom was established around the year 2325 BE (Buddhist Era). The main Buddha image in the ubosot serves as the center for meditation and worship. Subsequently, the temple received royal permission for the boundaries of the ecclesiastical territory on December 28, 2472 BE, granting it official religious status. This allowed for the continuous development and enhancement of its structures.
Wat Obthom features several important buildings, including the ubosot, which measures 8 meters wide and 12 meters long, built in 2474 BE (Buddhist Era) using brick and mortar. The interior is beautifully decorated, including murals that depict stories from Buddhism.
The sala, or multi-purpose hall, is another significant structure, measuring 15 meters wide and 27 meters long, built in 2499 BE (Buddhist Era). This wooden building is used for various temple activities. The chanting hall, measuring 6 meters wide and 18 meters long, was built in 2494 BE (Buddhist Era) and is used for prayer and meditation. Additionally, there are eight wooden monk quarters, a bell tower, a scripture hall, a dining hall, and a cemetery.
Wat Obthom serves not only as a site for spiritual practice but also plays a crucial role in fostering community relationships. It organizes various religious activities such as merit-making during special occasions and significant cultural festivals, including the Kathina ceremony and other important local traditions.
Education is another key focus of Wat Obthom. The temple offers teachings in Buddhist scriptures, providing the youth in the community with the opportunity to gain knowledge and a deeper understanding of Buddhist principles. This effort contributes to the development of good character among the community members.
