Wat Mathurosatiyaram located along the Asian Highway, was formerly known as "Wat Kuti." It is believed to have been built during the late Ayutthaya period, though there is no definitive written record of its origin. The architectural style of the temple reflects its historical significance and age.
The temple grounds include a vihara, a sacred boundary wall (Kampaeng Kaew), an ordination hall (ubosot), and a stupa, all of which are well-preserved ancient structures. The temple's ubosot is especially unique, featuring a stupa-shaped structure with a curved design resembling a ship. It was constructed from bricks and mortar, measuring 4 meters in width, 8 meters in length, and 6 meters in height. The roof is covered with traditional terracotta tiles, showcasing intricate craftsmanship passed down from the Ayutthaya era.
One of the most outstanding artistic features of the temple is the finely carved wooden pediment on the front and rear of the ubosot. The intricate design includes a central lotus flower pattern with coiled stems, and the end of the pattern is notably shaped like a large tail. What makes this design particularly distinctive is that the lotus flower appears to resemble a divine figure (Thep Nimitr) atop the lotus, a rare motif in Thai art. This carving exemplifies a blend of traditional art with imaginative and unique elements.
Wat Mathurosatiyaram stands as an important cultural and artistic landmark for both tourists and those interested in architecture. The temple is conveniently accessible, located on Highway 32, about 500 meters past the entrance to Ang Thong, heading towards Nakhon Sawan. From there, a right turn into the PTT gas station and a 30-meter drive will lead directly to the temple.
With its historical value and architectural beauty, Wat Mathurosatiyaram remains a significant site, showcasing the flourishing artistry and cultural heritage of the Ayutthaya period.
