Plearn Wan Hua Hin was once one of the most famous tourist attractions in Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. Although the place is now permanently closed, the name “Plearn Wan” still lives on in the memories of many travelers. At one time, it was considered an important landmark of Hua Hin that recreated the nostalgic atmosphere of Thailand’s past, especially the ambiance of Thai society around the period of 1947–1957 (B.E. 2490–2500).

 

The idea of creating Plearn Wan came from its founder, Patra Sahawat, who wanted Hua Hin to have a different kind of tourist destination beyond beaches and seaside resorts. The goal was to create a place that could tell stories of the past, evoke nostalgic memories, and allow younger generations to experience the charm of traditional Thai life through a space designed to resemble a small town from decades ago.

 

Plearn Wan was therefore developed as a retro-style market. All of the buildings were constructed from wood and designed as two-story structures connected by wooden walkways throughout the area. The interior was decorated with vintage items such as old advertising signs, classic movie posters, traditional telephone booths, and small shops selling retro-style goods. All of these elements helped create the feeling of stepping back in time.

 

The entrance of Plearn Wan once featured wooden and corrugated metal structures that resembled the gate of a small old town. When visitors walked through the entrance, they would find themselves in a lively market area filled with shops, restaurants, and souvenir stores. The rows of wooden two-story buildings created the atmosphere of an old marketplace, while many corners were specially designed as photo spots that made Plearn Wan a popular location for photography.

 

During the time it was open, visitors could explore numerous shops selling a wide variety of products and food. These included traditional Thai dishes, classic Thai desserts, beverages, toys, daily items, and souvenirs designed with nostalgic elements. Many items were displayed in a way that made visitors feel as if they were walking through a marketplace from the past.

 

In addition to shops and restaurants, Plearn Wan also featured areas for activities and performances that brought energy to the place during the evening and night. At times, events, live music, and cultural activities were organized, attracting both Thai and international tourists who came to experience the unique atmosphere.

 

During its peak popularity, Plearn Wan became one of the most important check-in spots in Hua Hin. Many tourists visiting Hua Hin’s beaches would come to Plearn Wan in the evening to stroll around, take photos, and enjoy local food before returning to their accommodation. The nighttime atmosphere was lively, with lights from the shops, conversations from visitors, and the aroma of food filling the air.

 

Plearn Wan also served as a significant example of the “retro market” concept that gained popularity in Thailand during that period. Designing a space that resembled an old town made it easy for visitors to connect emotionally with the past. This concept later inspired many similar tourist destinations across Thailand, including retro markets and cultural communities focusing on storytelling and heritage.

 

However, as time passed, tourism trends gradually changed, and competition from newer attractions increased. As a result, Plearn Wan slowly lost its momentum and eventually announced its permanent closure in 2020 (B.E. 2563), marking the end of one of Hua Hin’s most memorable tourist attractions.

 

Even though the physical site is no longer open, the story of Plearn Wan continues to be remembered as an important landmark in Hua Hin’s tourism history. Many people still recall the wooden two-story buildings, vintage signs, traditional dessert stalls, and the nostalgic atmosphere that once filled the market.

 

Getting There In the past, travelers coming from Bangkok could drive along Phetkasem Road toward Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, passing through Phetchaburi town and Cha-am Beach before reaching Hua Hin. Visitors would then continue toward Klai Kangwon Palace, as Plearn Wan was located opposite the palace along Phetkasem Road, making it easily accessible and close to several important attractions in Hua Hin.

 

Although Plearn Wan is no longer open today, its name remains part of Hua Hin’s travel stories. It stands as a reminder of a unique tourist attraction that once created memorable experiences for countless visitors and represents a chapter in the history of this famous seaside town.
