Wat Song Phi Nong is located at 99 Moo 1, Song Phi Nong Subdistrict, Kaeng Krachan District, Phetchaburi Province. It belongs to the Mahanikaya order and has long served as a spiritual anchor for the local community. Although the temple was established in the late 20th century, its role extends beyond religious rites. It is also a place where community bonds are nurtured, reflecting a rural way of life that remains closely tied to simplicity and Buddhist faith.

Wat Song Phi Nong was officially established on 25 September B.E. 2538 (1995) on a land area of approximately 25 rai and 40 square wah. The surrounding area is largely agricultural and closely dependent on nature. Having a temple at the heart of the community provides a vital moral and spiritual foundation for villagers, from merit-making and traditional ceremonies to ordinations, funerals, and meetings or public-benefit activities. In this way, the temple is not only a religious site but a true center of community life.

According to accounts passed down by elderly residents of Song Phi Nong Subdistrict, before the temple was officially founded, villagers had to travel to nearby subdistricts to participate in religious ceremonies, which was inconvenient for the elderly and children. The collective effort to establish a local temple arose from the community’s own needs. Villagers contributed land, labor, and building materials, enabling them to construct the ubosot and essential monastic structures within a relatively short time. Wat Song Phi Nong therefore stands as a tangible outcome of shared faith and cooperation within the community.

The temple’s principal monastic buildings include a two-storey reinforced-concrete ubosot (ordination hall), approximately 12 meters wide and 25 meters long, built in B.E. 2538 (1995), used for sanghakamma and major Buddhist ceremonies. There is also a two-storey wooden prayer hall, about 10 meters wide and 20 meters long, which preserves a simple rural-temple atmosphere, along with 4 monks’ quarters and a merit-making pavilion used for ceremonies, annual festivals, and community gatherings.

The most important sacred object at the temple is the principal Buddha image enshrined in the ubosot, which is deeply revered by local devotees. Many believe it represents a focal point of peace and auspiciousness. On important Buddhist holy days such as Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, and the beginning of Buddhist Lent, the temple typically holds candlelight processions and communal merit-making, creating an atmosphere that is simple yet warm and heartfelt.

Key annual activities at Wat Song Phi Nong include merit-making during Buddhist Lent, the Kathina ceremony, and communal robe-offering ceremonies (Pha Pa Samakkhi). These occasions often bring families together, as many who work away from home return to participate in merit-making with relatives. The temple also hosts New Year’s Eve chanting and moral-education programs for youth during school holidays, reflecting its role in nurturing ethics and values for the next generation.

In terms of administration, Wat Song Phi Nong has had abbots who have continually guided both the temple and the community. The first abbot on record was Phra Athikan Sammacha Mahapanyo (B.E. 2534–2543 / 1991–2000). The current abbot is Phra Athikan Prasit Pabhatharo (B.E. 2543 / 2000 – present), who continues to support Buddhist affairs, oversee temple development, and coordinate with the community for local activities.

Getting There The recommended way to reach Wat Song Phi Nong is by private car.
