Wat Manothammararam (Nang No) is an ancient temple in Kanchanaburi Province, located in Muang Chum Subdistrict, Tha Muang District. The temple covers an area of approximately 30 rai, with its western side bordering the Mae Klong River. This riverside setting creates a calm and shaded environment that is highly conducive to meditation and religious practice. Although there is no clear historical record indicating the exact year of its foundation, the artistic style and archaeological remains within the temple suggest that Wat Manothammararam dates back several centuries and was likely prosperous during the early Ayutthaya period.

The most significant artistic feature reflecting the temple’s antiquity is its ancient prang, a form of architectural structure commonly found in temples from the Ayutthaya era. The prang at Wat Manothammararam serves as an important historical landmark, indicating the temple’s former prominence as a religious and communal center before it was affected by the wars between Siam and Burma in the past.

During the period of warfare between Siam and Burma, the Kanchanaburi region suffered severe disruption. Many villagers were forced to flee to safer areas, and Wat Manothammararam was abandoned for a time, becoming a deserted temple like many others in the region. Buildings and archaeological structures within the temple gradually deteriorated due to neglect, until peace was eventually restored and villagers began returning to their original settlements.

After the villagers returned, they united to restore and renovate Wat Manothammararam. A woman named “No” played a crucial role as a key driving force behind the restoration efforts, contributing significantly to organization, coordination, and community morale. In recognition of her dedication, the villagers came to refer to the temple as “Wat Nang No.” Later, the temple was officially named “Wat Manothammararam.”

Within the temple grounds are several important historical and sacred structures. Among them is a reclining Buddha image (Phra Phuttha Saiyat), estimated to be no less than 500 years old. This image stands as vital evidence of the temple’s long history and remains an object of deep reverence for local residents and visitors. In addition, the ancient prang within the temple complex symbolizes the prosperity of the early Ayutthaya period and attracts historians and archaeology enthusiasts alike.

Another notable feature of Wat Manothammararam is its Fish Park (Uthayan Matcha), located along the Mae Klong River. This area allows visitors to feed fish and relax in a peaceful riverside atmosphere. The temple has also been designated as the 4th Provincial Meditation Center of Kanchanaburi, underscoring its important role in promoting Buddhist teachings and structured meditation practice at the provincial level.

Today, Wat Manothammararam continues to serve as a spiritual and religious center for the Muang Chum community. In addition to regular religious activities, the temple accommodates individuals interested in meditation practice, offering both day visits and residential retreats. The tranquil environment and close connection to nature provide an ideal setting for the study and practice of Buddhist principles.

Getting There Wat Manothammararam is easily accessible by private vehicle. From Bangkok, take Borommaratchachonnani Road toward Nakhon Pathom and pass the Nakhon Chai Si intersection. Continue toward Ratchaburi and then enter Kanchanaburi Province. Upon reaching Tha Muang District, follow the route to Muang Chum Subdistrict. From the Mae Klong Dam floodgate, drive straight for approximately 400 meters to a forced three-way intersection, then turn right to reach Wat Manothammararam (Nang No).
