Wat Latthiwan (Wat Phra Non Khon Tan) is a culturally and religiously significant temple located in Ban Khon Tan, Rim Tai Subdistrict, Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai Province. Known for its revered reclining Buddha statue, the temple is steeped in history and serves as a center for religious practices and merit-making events that attract locals and devotees year-round.

Historical Background and Religious Significance Wat Latthiwan was originally established over 200 years ago, during the late Ayutthaya period, as a small temple for local monks and residents to practice Buddhism. It has since undergone several restorations, notably during the reign of King Rama V, when the large reclining Buddha, known as Phra Non Khon Tan or Phra Buddha Prodot Asurindrahun, was constructed. This statue is a revered landmark, believed by locals to bring peace and relieve the hardships of those who come to pay respects.

The temple grounds are home to various sacred sites, each with its unique significance. These include the reclining Buddha statue, the Phra Borommathat Stupa, and the revered Phra Chao Than Jai. Highlights are as follows:

Reclining Buddha Statue (Phra Non Khon Tan): Measuring over 50 meters in length, this large reclining Buddha is a prominent feature of Wat Latthiwan, symbolizing tranquility and elegance. Locals and visitors come to offer prayers for health, prosperity, and blessings in their lives.

Phra Borommathat Stupa: This stupa enshrines relics of the Buddha and showcases traditional Lanna architecture. During important Buddhist days, such as Makha Bucha and Asalha Bucha, the temple holds special ceremonies in which relics are paraded for devotees to worship up close.

Phra Chao Than Jai: Known for granting wishes promptly, this revered statue is sought out by visitors hoping for quick and fulfilling blessings. It was created in a short period yet is believed to have potent powers to answer the faithful’s prayers.

Wat Latthiwan provides a serene and natural atmosphere, surrounded by lush trees and colorful flower gardens. The peaceful environment encourages relaxation and contemplation, making it a suitable place for meditation and spiritual renewal. Visitors and locals alike can spend time in quiet reflection in a setting that fosters positivity and calm.

The temple organizes a range of religious activities and events throughout the year, allowing locals and devotees to participate in Buddhist practices and merit-making. Notable activities include:
- Relic Procession: This significant ceremony occurs on important Buddhist days and involves a relic procession around the temple, allowing the public to participate in worship and merit-making.

- Cattle Release Project: This initiative allows supporters to release cows and buffaloes slated for slaughter. Participants view this as a major act of kindness and merit, as they help save animals’ lives.

- Coffin and Funeral Fuel Donations for the Unclaimed: Through this charity project, the temple provides coffins and fuel for cremating those who have passed away without relatives or resources, aiding in their respectful farewell.

Traveling to Wat Latthiwan Traveling from Chiang Mai city center to Wat Latthiwan by car can be done via two main routes:
Route 1001: This route heads toward Phrao District and takes about 30–40 minutes. The road offers scenic mountain and countryside views, ideal for those who enjoy a more nature-oriented drive.

Route 107: This road goes through Mae Rim and Mae Taeng districts and takes around 50–60 minutes. It is a larger, more accessible route that is serviced by public transportation and taxis.

Visitors to Wat Latthiwan are encouraged to dress modestly to show respect for this sacred site. Bringing offerings for merit-making, such as candles, flowers, or other items, is also recommended. The temple hosts various charity activities and donation programs aimed at assisting the underprivileged in the community in areas like education and healthcare, as well as preserving the temple itself. Visitors are welcome to participate in these acts of kindness according to their own beliefs and means.
