Tham Pla – Pha Suea National Park is one of the most remarkable natural attractions in northern Thailand, located in Mae Hong Son Province. Covering approximately 488 square kilometers, the park spans across Mueang Mae Hong Son District and Pang Mapha District, offering visitors a landscape of dramatic mountains, dense forests, limestone formations, and freshwater ecosystems that remain largely untouched.

 

The park’s terrain is characterized by complex mountain ranges formed from limestone and granite, creating caves, cliffs, valleys, and natural streams. These geological formations have developed over millions of years, resulting in unique natural attractions that are both visually stunning and ecologically significant.

 

One of the most iconic features of the park is Tham Pla (Fish Cave), located approximately 17 kilometers from Mae Hong Son town along Highway 1095. Unlike typical caves, Tham Pla features a natural pool at the base of a mountain, where clear freshwater flows continuously from underground sources.

 

This pool is home to a large number of fish known locally as “Pla Mung” or “Pla Kang,” which belong to the carp family. These fish grow to impressive sizes and are easily visible in the clear water, creating a fascinating experience for visitors.

 

What makes Tham Pla particularly unique is the cultural belief surrounding the fish. Local communities consider them sacred, and it is widely believed that harming them would bring misfortune. This belief has helped protect the fish population, allowing them to thrive naturally for generations.

 

The surrounding environment of the cave is lush and shaded, with a stream flowing through dense forest. Wooden walkways allow visitors to explore the area comfortably while preserving the natural ecosystem.

 

Another highlight of the park is Pha Suea Waterfall, located in Mok Cham Pae Subdistrict. The waterfall originates from Myanmar and flows down a wide rock face approximately 10 meters high and 15 meters wide.

 

During the rainy season, from July to September, the waterfall becomes particularly impressive. The water spreads across the rock surface, creating a curtain-like flow that resembles a woven mat, which inspired the name “Pha Suea.”

 

The park also offers nature trails, scenic viewpoints, and opportunities to observe wildlife and plant diversity. Visitors can experience different types of forests, including evergreen forest, pine forest, mixed deciduous forest, and dry dipterocarp forest.

 

Seasonal changes significantly affect the landscape. The rainy season brings lush greenery and powerful waterfalls, while the cool season offers comfortable weather for exploration. Even in the hot season, the forest provides shade and a refreshing atmosphere.

 

The park is ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and travelers seeking a peaceful escape. Its combination of natural beauty, cultural significance, and accessibility makes it one of the must-visit destinations in Mae Hong Son.

 

Getting There Visitors can travel by car from Mae Hong Son town via Highway 1095 toward Pai. The journey takes approximately 20–30 minutes. The road is fully paved and accessible throughout the year.
