Wat To Phae in Mae Hong Son is an ancient riverside temple that reflects the deep cultural and historical roots of local communities. Located in Ban To Phae, Mae Ngao Subdistrict, Khun Yuam District, the temple sits along the right bank of the Yuam River, a vital waterway that once played a central role in transportation and trade.

The temple is approximately 7 kilometers from Khun Yuam town and is easily accessible via a paved road. A key landmark is Wat Muay To located across the road, after which visitors continue for about 5 kilometers to reach the temple, surrounded by lush greenery and a peaceful riverside setting.

The most striking feature of Wat To Phae is its large Burmese-style viharn, showcasing intricate craftsmanship and detailed decorative elements. The architectural style reflects Burmese influence combined with local traditions, making it one of the most visually distinctive temples in the region.

Inside the main hall is a remarkable historical artifact: a 150-year-old velvet curtain measuring 1.65 meters wide and 3.80 meters long. It is decorated with 164 beads, pearls, and rubies crafted in Myanmar, depicting a scene from the Vessantara Jataka. This piece represents a rare example of traditional craftsmanship.

The temple also features an ancient pulpit built in 1921, still preserved in good condition, along with a Mon-style chedi that reflects the cultural diversity of the region.

Historically, this area served as a gathering point for timber transported along the Yuam River. Local raft builders established the temple as a spiritual center and named it “Wat To Phae,” reflecting their occupation and community identity.

Getting There From Khun Yuam District, travel approximately 7 kilometers toward Mae Ngao Subdistrict, then continue another 5 kilometers past Wat Muay To. The temple is located on the right side near the Yuam River.
