Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu is the temple most closely associated with the image of Mae Hong Son. Located on Doi Kong Mu to the west of the town, it is both the province’s most important relic temple and one of its best panoramic viewpoints. The two white chedis standing on the hill have become one of the most recognizable symbols of Mae Hong Son.

 

The temple was formerly known as Wat Plai Doi. It later became widely known as Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, with the Tai Yai word “Kong Mu” meaning “pagoda.” The name reflects the strong Tai Yai cultural identity that continues to shape Mae Hong Son’s history, language, and religious architecture.

 

Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu is regarded as the provincial temple and one of the most sacred landmarks in Mae Hong Son. It features two beautiful Tai Yai–Burmese style chedis. The larger chedi was built in 1860 by a wealthy devotee named Chong Tong Su to enshrine relics of Phra Moggalana brought from Moulmein in Myanmar. The smaller chedi was built in 1874 by Phraya Singhanatracha, the first ruler of Mae Hong Son, to enshrine relics of Phra Sariputta brought from Mandalay.

 

Because of this history, the temple is far more than a scenic hilltop attraction. It is a deeply meaningful religious site, a visible symbol of the city, and an important historical landmark that reflects the early formation of Mae Hong Son itself.

 

The two chedis clearly display Tai Yai–Burmese artistic influence, with elegant forms and a highly distinctive silhouette. Seen from afar, they stand out against the mountain landscape and immediately identify the skyline of Mae Hong Son.

 

One of the main reasons travelers visit the temple is the view. From the temple grounds, visitors can enjoy a wide and beautiful panorama of Mae Hong Son town, Nong Chong Kham, and the surrounding mountain ranges. Morning offers fresh air and crisp visibility, while late afternoon is especially popular for warm light and scenic photography.

 

Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu also remains an active religious center. Public information identifies the current abbot as Phra Sumonthasanakitti, confirming that the temple continues to play a central role in religious life in Mae Hong Son today.

 

The temple is also closely tied to important annual traditions. Major merit-making activities take place during New Year, Songkran, and especially at the end of Buddhist Lent, when ceremonies such as Tak Bat Dao Dueng and Tak Bat Thewo are held here.

 

Getting There The temple is easy to reach. From Highway 108 near the Phraya Singhanatracha Monument, turn left and continue uphill on the paved road for about 1.5 km. Private cars, motorcycles, tuk-tuks, and local songthaews can all reach the temple conveniently.
