Wat Ko Klang Archaeological Site is located in Ban Bo Khao, Ban Ruean Subdistrict, Pa Sang District, Lamphun Province. It is one of Lamphun’s important archaeological sites, offering a rare view into the relationship between the Ping River landscape, Mon communities, Hariphunchai art, Dvaravati-influenced architectural concepts, and the early Lanna period.

 

The name “Ko Klang” means “middle island,” reflecting the site’s original landscape. In the past, this area was surrounded by the Ping River and a branching watercourse that flowed around the land before joining the main river again. Later, the Ping River changed its course, and the former island gradually became part of the eastern bank of the river. Although the original water landscape has largely changed, the name of the site still preserves the memory of its riverine setting.

 

Wat Ko Klang is significant because it contains a group of archaeological remains that help explain the cultural transition from Hariphunchai to early Lanna. The site includes architectural remains, ancient objects, stucco fragments, and decorative elements that reflect craftsmanship from different artistic traditions. Many features are associated with Hariphunchai and early Lanna art, while some architectural concepts also show Dvaravati influence.

 

One of the most interesting features of the site is its stucco decoration. These fragments are more than ornamental remains; they are evidence of religious belief, artistic taste, and the skill of local craftsmen in the Ping River basin. The site also reflects Mon cultural connections in Pa Sang, an area long associated with ancient communities and local stories about Queen Chamadevi.

 

Local traditions connect the site with stories of Setthi Inta and Queen Chamadevi, adding another cultural layer to the archaeological remains. For visitors, Wat Ko Klang is not only a place to see ancient ruins, but also a place to understand how archaeology, local memory, rivers, and community identity are connected in Lamphun.

 

The Lamphun Provincial Administrative Organization has supported excavation and restoration work at Wat Ko Klang to develop it as an archaeological learning site and cultural attraction. Visitors should walk carefully, avoid climbing on the ruins, and refrain from touching or moving any ancient fragments. The site is best visited slowly, with attention to the layout, brick foundations, stucco fragments, and traces of old sacred architecture.

 

Travel Information: From Lamphun town, travel toward Pa Sang District, then continue to Ban Ruean Subdistrict and Ban Bo Khao. The site is suitable for a cultural route that also includes Wat Nong Ngueak, Ban Nong Ngueak Weaving Village, Wat Phra Phutthabat Tak Pha, and Ban Don Luang Handicraft Village.
