Bueng Boraphet is one of Thailand’s most important natural attractions and the largest freshwater swamp in the country, covering over 132,737 rai. It spans across three districts in Nakhon Sawan Province: Mueang Nakhon Sawan, Tha Tako, and Chum Saeng. The vast scale of this wetland is not only impressive in size but also reflects a rich and rare ecological abundance, earning it the nickname “The Northern Sea” or “Jom Bueng,” which highlights its significance as a major natural resource.

 

From a geographical perspective, Bueng Boraphet is classified as a wetland ecosystem that plays a crucial role in the upper central region of Thailand. It serves as a natural water reservoir, a breeding ground for aquatic species, and a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. In particular, it is home to numerous water birds, making it an important ecological and educational site.

 

Historically, the area was once a large floodplain formed by natural river changes, connected to both the Nan River and the Chao Phraya River. This constant water supply supported a highly diverse ecosystem. Later, the government developed and managed the area for agriculture, fisheries, and conservation, giving Bueng Boraphet a dual role in both environmental sustainability and economic development.

 

Surveys have recorded more than 148 animal species and 44 aquatic plant species within the swamp. In the past, rare species such as the Princess Sirindhorn bird and tiger fish were found here, indicating the ecological richness of the area. Although some species have become rare today, the swamp remains a vital conservation site in Thailand.

 

One of the most notable features of Bueng Boraphet is its status as a premier bird-watching destination. During the winter months from November to March, large numbers of migratory birds arrive, including ducks and storks. Resident species such as moorhens and jacanas can be seen throughout the year, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.

 

Parts of Bueng Boraphet have been designated as a non-hunting wildlife area to protect its ecosystem. It is managed by wildlife conservation authorities, while the Department of Fisheries operates a development station to support fish breeding and aquatic research, contributing to long-term environmental sustainability.

 

Another major highlight is the Bueng Boraphet Aquarium, built in the shape of a traditional Thai fishing boat. It features over 100 freshwater fish species, along with marine species, and includes a 24-meter underwater tunnel that allows visitors to experience aquatic life up close.

 

Inside the aquarium, visitors can also enjoy a Touch Pool area, where they can interact with certain marine animals such as bamboo sharks and sea urchins. Additionally, scheduled fish feeding diving shows provide an engaging experience, especially for families and children.

 

Tourist activities at Bueng Boraphet are diverse, ranging from boat tours and bird watching to photography and recreational water activities like banana boats and jet skiing. There are also OTOP product centers showcasing local goods, along with accommodations for visitors who wish to stay overnight.

 

Getting There Bueng Boraphet can be accessed by several routes. By car, visitors can take Highway 225 (Nakhon Sawan–Chum Saeng) or Highway 3001 (Nakhon Sawan–Tha Tako), both clearly marked. Alternatively, visitors can travel by boat from the Nan River in Nakhon Sawan city into the swamp.

 

Boat tours are among the most popular activities at Bueng Boraphet. Visitors can rent long-tail boats to explore the natural scenery. Small boats typically accommodate about 5 people, while larger boats can hold up to 10 passengers. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and passes key areas such as Ko Lad, a prime bird-watching location.

 

The best time for boat tours and bird watching is early morning between 08:00 and 09:00, when birds are most active. The calm atmosphere, cool air, and natural lighting during this time also make it ideal for photography.

 

Beyond boating, visitors can explore nature trails within the bird park zone. Elevated wooden walkways allow close observation of wildlife without disturbing the ecosystem, along with designated bird-watching points.

 

For those interested in fisheries, the freshwater fisheries station offers educational exhibits of various fish species such as giant barb, sea bass, and striped catfish, all of which are economically significant in Thailand.

 

There are also entertainment activities such as crocodile shows and monkey performances, which are especially popular among families. These shows are conducted in designated areas with appropriate safety measures.
