Vongburi House, also known as Khum Vongburi, is one of the most beautiful and historically important teak mansions in Phrae. Located at 50 Kham Lue Road in Nai Wiang, Mueang Phrae, close to Wat Phong Sunan, this elegant two-storey house is more than just a photogenic heritage site. The house was built in 1907 by Chao Phrom, also known as Luang Phongphibun, and Chao Sunanta Wongburi, daughter of Chao Buri or Phraya Burirat. It was constructed by craftsmen from Guangdong, China, together with skilled local woodworkers from Phrae. This combination produced an unusually refined residence that blends outside influence with northern Thai craftsmanship. The result is a house that feels both cosmopolitan and deeply rooted in local identity.

 

Architecturally, Vongburi House is a two-storey European-influenced teak mansion with a brick-and-cement base raised about one meter above the ground. The house has a hipped roof, high ceilings, and a ventilated double-roof system designed to improve airflow. Because the main facade faces the southwest, the structure was planned to receive cooling breezes during the hot season. This shows that the house was not simply built to look elegant, but was also adapted thoughtfully to the climate of Phrae.

 

The most celebrated feature of the house is its intricate carved wooden decoration. Fine woodwork appears on the gables, eaves, balconies, ventilation panels, drip edges, windows, and doors. These details give the mansion its distinctive character and explain why it is often described as one of the most graceful heritage houses in northern Thailand. Even after restoration, much of the decorative carving remains original, which adds greatly to the authenticity of the site.

 

One of the house’s most memorable symbolic details is the plaster goat motif above the front entrance. The goat represents both Luang Phongphibun and Chao Sunanta, as they were both born in the Year of the Goat. This detail gives the building a more personal and intimate meaning. In 1993, the house received an Outstanding Conservation Award from the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage. This recognition confirms the importance of the mansion not only to local memory, but also to the national field of architectural heritage conservation. Over the years, the house has also been used as a filming location for movies and has appeared in various books and publications, further reinforcing its status as one of Phrae’s most iconic historic landmarks.

 

Today, Vongburi House continues to function as more than a static museum.
