Wat Luang is one of the most historically significant temples in Phrae Province, established at the same time as the founding of the city in 1373 BE. Located in Nai Wiang Subdistrict, this temple represents the spiritual and cultural heart of Phrae for centuries.
The temple was originally built to enshrine Phra Chao Saen Luang, a sacred Buddha image once made entirely of gold. This reflected the wealth and devotion of the city. However, during a Burmese invasion, the gold was taken and the statue damaged.
Later, under Phraya Pira Chaiwong, the temple was restored, including the construction of Phra That Luang Chai Chang Kham, an octagonal pagoda supported by elephant sculptures. This restoration revived the temple’s importance.
The temple features a peaceful atmosphere, traditional Lanna architecture, and cultural significance that connects the past and present of Phrae.
Travel Information Wat Luang is located in central Phrae and easily accessible from key landmarks.
