Phra That Tal Haeng is an ancient stupa in Phrae Province that reflects the rich cultural heritage, beliefs, and historical transitions of the region. It stands as a significant religious landmark where history, legend, and faith intertwine, making it a meaningful destination for both spiritual travelers and cultural explorers.

The origins of Phra That Tal Haeng date back to around 1699 CE (B.E. 2242), when a group known as the “Man” people constructed the stupa. At that time, the area served as an important settlement. However, conflicts and invasions by the Ngiao people led to the abandonment of the settlement, leaving the stupa in ruins and the surrounding area deserted for many years.

In 1782 CE (B.E. 2325), local leaders including Chao Saen Chang and Phra Ya Meng Rai cleared the forest and rediscovered the site. They found an ancient stone inscription written in Khmer script near the stupa. Although no one at the time could read it, the discovery confirmed the site's historical importance.

By that time, the stupa had deteriorated significantly, resembling only a small mound. Later, on March 15, 1857, Kruba Apichai Wannato led a restoration effort with the support of local villagers, rebuilding the stupa into a more stable and recognizable form. This restoration marked a turning point in reviving the site as a center of faith.

The name “Tal Haeng” comes from a palm tree found within the temple grounds, which had a distinctive crack running from its base to the top. This unique characteristic led locals to name the temple Wat Tal Haeng, and eventually the stupa became known as Phra That Tal Haeng.

Today, the site remains peaceful and retains its authentic local atmosphere. Visitors can experience a serene environment surrounded by nature and traditional village life, making it an ideal destination for those seeking tranquility and spiritual reflection.
