Spirit Worship Ceremony of Chao Luang Mueang La is a significant cultural tradition of the Tai Lue people in Northern Thailand. It reflects their deep-rooted beliefs, history, and identity, particularly their connection to ancestral spirits.

According to oral traditions, Chao Luang Mueang La was a ruler of the ancient city in Sipsongpanna and a highly respected warrior and leader. Even after his passing, his spirit is believed to continue protecting his descendants.

This ceremony is a way for the Tai Lue community to honor their ancestors, reinforce cultural identity, and strengthen unity among villages.

The ritual involves selecting a representative known as the “Chao Mueang,” who must be a descendant of the original lineage. Another important role is the “Mo Mueang,” who performs ceremonial duties such as offering food.

The ceremony lasts for three days. One of the most unique aspects is the symbolic closure of the village using woven bamboo barriers called “Ta Laew,” restricting entry and exit to preserve the sanctity of the ritual.

There are processions, ritual offerings, traditional singing called “Khab Lue,” and local games, making the event both spiritual and celebratory.
