Wat Phra That Khao Noi is a prominent hilltop temple located in Chaiyasathan Subdistrict, Mueang Nan District, Nan Province. The temple stands on Khao Noi hill, west of Nan city, offering one of the most impressive panoramic viewpoints in the province. It is also located along the same route as Wat Phaya Wat, near kilometer marker 2, making it easily accessible for visitors traveling by car.

 

The temple was established in 2030 BE during the reign of Chao Pu Khaeng, a ruler of Nan. Its construction reflects the strong influence of Buddhism in shaping both the cultural and spiritual landscape of the region. Building a temple on elevated ground was a common practice in ancient times, symbolizing a sacred space closer to the heavens and reinforcing the spiritual significance of the site.

 

The main chedi of Wat Phra That Khao Noi is constructed entirely of brick and plaster and represents a blend of Burmese and Lanna architectural styles. This combination reflects the historical connections between Nan and neighboring regions, especially during periods of political and cultural exchange. The structure itself is simple yet elegant, emphasizing sacred symbolism over elaborate ornamentation.

 

Inside the chedi are enshrined the sacred hair relics of the Buddha, making the temple an important pilgrimage destination. For centuries, local residents have visited this temple to pay respect, make merit, and seek blessings for prosperity and good fortune. The presence of these relics elevates the temple’s importance beyond a scenic viewpoint to a deeply spiritual site.

 

Wat Phra That Khao Noi underwent a major restoration during the reign of King Suriyapong Pharitdet between 2449–2454 BE. Burmese craftsmen played a significant role in this renovation, which explains the visible Burmese influence in the temple’s architectural details today. The viharn was also constructed during this period, creating a cohesive architectural identity for the temple complex.

 

One of the most iconic landmarks at the temple is the large standing Buddha image known as Phra Buddha Maha Udom Mongkol Nantaburi Sri Nan. This statue is depicted in the gesture of granting blessings and stands on a lotus base approximately 9 meters high. The topknot of the statue is made of gold weighing 27 baht, symbolizing prosperity and reverence.

 

The statue was built in 1999 to commemorate the auspicious occasion of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 6th cycle birthday anniversary (72 years old). It serves not only as a religious monument but also as a symbol of national unity and devotion. Visitors often come here to pay respect and take photographs with the breathtaking backdrop of Nan city.

 

The viewpoint at Wat Phra That Khao Noi is widely regarded as one of the best in Nan Province. From the temple grounds, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of the entire city, including the Nan River and surrounding mountains. The scenery is particularly stunning during sunrise and sunset, when the changing light creates a peaceful and atmospheric setting.

 

The temple’s environment is calm and serene, surrounded by greenery and fresh air. It provides an ideal place for meditation, relaxation, and quiet reflection. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with the panoramic views, makes it a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking a moment of tranquility.

 

Getting There is convenient from Nan city. Visitors can follow Highway 101 and turn toward Khao Noi hill near kilometer marker 2. The road leading up to the temple is paved and suitable for cars, allowing easy access to the viewpoint area. For those who prefer a more immersive experience, it is also possible to walk up the steps to the temple, enjoying the natural surroundings along the way.
