Wat Phra Phutthachai is located at the foothill of Khao Pathawi in Nong Pla Lai Subdistrict, Saraburi Province. It is a culturally and historically significant temple, situated along the same route as Sam Lan National Park, making it easy to include in a day trip itinerary. The highlight of this temple is the “Buddha Shadow” or rock imprint of a Buddha image on a cliff, protected within a pavilion.

 

The Buddha Shadow is naturally imprinted on a rock surface located on a cliff ledge, giving the site both spiritual and natural significance. A pavilion has been built to preserve this sacred feature, and visitors can walk up a staircase from the temple base to reach the pavilion and continue further up to the cliff viewpoint above.

 

Beyond its religious importance, the temple area is also archaeologically significant. Prehistoric rock paintings can be found around the cliff base, including animal drawings resembling deer, human handprints, and symbolic figures near the entrance to the Buddha Shadow site. Additional paintings of chickens, Buddha images, and abstract symbols can be found along the path from Ruesi Cave toward the western side of the site.

 

These ancient paintings are comparable to those found at Pha Taem in Ubon Ratchathani and are believed to be around 3,000 years old. Created using natural resin, they reflect the beliefs, rituals, and communication methods of prehistoric communities.

 

Another important discovery at this temple is a right Buddha footprint found in 1994 during restoration work by the Fine Arts Department. It was uncovered beneath sand after removing a cement floor, revealing a clear footprint impression embedded in stone.

 

The surrounding atmosphere is peaceful and shaded by nature, making it ideal for visitors seeking both spiritual experience and historical exploration. The combination of religious significance and archaeological value makes this temple unique.

 

Getting There Visitors can travel from Saraburi city toward Sam Lan National Park, following the same route. Clear signs lead to the temple, and the journey is convenient by private car.
