Wat Ratchachang Khwan

Wat Ratchachang Khwan, located in Phichit Province, is an ancient temple of significant religious and cultural importance to the local community. This temple has a long history and plays a crucial role in religious activities, particularly the annual seasonal ordination of monks and novices, which takes place between March and April each year. This event is one of the key local traditions, involving both ritual practices and the promotion of moral values among children and youth. The seasonal ordination allows monks and novices to study and practice Buddhism for a period of time, fostering a deep understanding of Buddhist teachings.

 

Within the grounds of Wat Ratchachang Khwan is also the Chao Mae Mongkol Thong Shrine, commonly referred to by locals as Khwan Mongkol. This shrine, shaped like a boat, serves as a guardian for the village boats and those participating in local boat races. The Khwan Mongkol Thong boat is large enough to carry up to 55 rowers and is revered by the villagers as the “mother” of the village. This temple’s boat plays a central role in the annual boat races and other rituals, especially the boat worship ceremony held on National Mother’s Day, August 12, and on the day before village boat races. These ceremonies reflect the villagers’ strong bond with the Khwan Mongkol Thong boat and showcase the local beliefs and cultural traditions passed down through generations.

 

The temple’s abbot lineage has been recorded since the temple’s founding in 1767 (B.E. 2310), totaling 16 abbots to date. The current abbot, Phra Kru Wichit Phatthanaphithan, commonly known as Phra Kru Praneet, plays a key role in overseeing religious and cultural activities within the community, including supporting the seasonal ordination and the boat worship ceremonies.

 

Wat Ratchachang Khwan is not only a place for worship and Buddhist practice but also serves as a learning center for local history and culture. It reflects the lifestyle, beliefs, and traditions of Phichit villagers. Activities such as seasonal ordination, village boat races, and the Khwan Mongkol Thong boat worship illustrate the harmonious connection between religion, culture, and the local community. The temple thus serves as a spiritual and cultural hub where visitors can experience the beauty of traditional Thai culture, learn about unique local customs, and witness the sustainable preservation of the community’s cultural heritage.
