The temple is best known for its unique double-layered chedi, where a newer circular structure was built over an older square-based chedi. This design represents the evolution of Lanna architecture and religious development.
 
According to historical chronicles, King Mueang Kaeo visited Chiang Saen in 1495 CE to resolve conflicts among Buddhist sects. This event led to religious unity and later architectural developments at the site.
 
The temple also features remains of a viharn, indicating its importance as a religious center in the past.
