Wat Phra Chao Lan Thong is one of the most important ancient temples in Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province. It is located within the old city walls, which once served as the center of the Lanna civilization. Inside the temple enshrines Phra Chao Lan Thong, a sacred Buddha image that has long been regarded as the spiritual symbol of Chiang Saen.

 

The temple was established in 1489 during the Lanna Kingdom. Its origin is associated with a legendary event in which gold and silver emerged from the ground, symbolizing prosperity. This belief led to the naming of the temple and the creation of its important Buddha image.

 

Phra Chao Lan Thong is a large Buddha statue cast from a metal alloy in the Lanna artistic style, weighing over one ton. It serves as a spiritual center for the people of Chiang Saen. In addition, the temple houses several ancient Buddha images and historical structures of significance.

 

The temple grounds are also considered highly significant in terms of traditional beliefs, as this area is known as the “navel of Chiang Saen” and is the location of the city pillar shrine. This makes the temple both a historical and spiritual landmark.

Getting There The temple can be reached from Chiang Rai city via Highway 1016, heading towards Chiang Saen District. The journey takes approximately 1.5 hours. Once inside the old city walls, the temple is easily accessible.
