Wat Tham Pha Chom in Chiang Rai Province is a temple located on the Doi Nang Non mountain range in Wiang Phang Kham Subdistrict, Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai. It is considered one of the most distinctive temples in terms of geography, history, beliefs, and sacredness. This temple is not only a place for religious activities but also a cultural and natural tourist attraction that continuously draws both Thai and international visitors.

 

In summary, Wat Tham Pha Chom is a cave temple that combines the beauty of stalactites and stalagmites, the sacredness of Buddha images inside the cave, and mysterious legends about the Naga cave and underground tunnels believed to connect to Myanmar. The temple was officially established on July 17, 1983 (B.E. 2526) and received its royal consecration boundary (Visungkhamsima) in the same year. Prior to its establishment, around 1973 (B.E. 2516), His Holiness Somdet Phra Sangharaja Krom Luang Chinvaralongkorn visited Tham Pha Chom and advised that it should be formally registered as a temple. This marked the beginning of the temple’s development into a religious center in the area.

 

Historically, this area was used as a meditation site by forest monks, especially Luang Pu Mun Bhuridatto, one of Thailand’s most revered meditation masters. As a result, Wat Tham Pha Chom holds significant spiritual importance and serves as a peaceful place for meditation. Today, a statue of Luang Pu Mun has been erected on the mountain for visitors to pay respect and commemorate his teachings.

 

The main highlight of Wat Tham Pha Chom is the “Tham Pha Chom Cave,” a large natural cave featuring beautiful stalactites and stalagmites formed over time. The cave walls and ceiling display unique natural patterns. Inside the cave, there are several important Buddha images, including standing Buddha statues, a reclining Buddha, and Luang Pho Sai Rung, all of which are deeply revered by visitors.

 

Another remarkable feature is the “Naga Cave,” which is believed to be inhabited by two Nagas. This belief has been passed down through generations. There are also stories about a deep cave passage that is said to extend into Myanmar, possibly stretching several kilometers and passing beneath the Sai River. This legend adds a mystical dimension to the temple’s identity.

 

Inside the cave, there are large chambers capable of accommodating many people. Some sections extend over 100 meters deep and are wide enough to hold thousands of visitors. In the past, these spaces were used for religious ceremonies and meditation practices.

 

Additionally, there are accounts from practitioners who meditated inside the cave, reporting hearing chanting sounds at night and experiencing visions of mysterious spaces within. These stories further enhance the sacred and enigmatic atmosphere of Wat Tham Pha Chom.

 

Another highlight is the “Relic Museum,” which houses Buddha relics, sacred remains, ashes, and hair relics of revered monks from across Thailand. It also features displays of ancient pottery from different historical periods, adding educational and cultural value to the temple.

 

The temple is situated in a valley, and the Doi Nang Non mountain range resembles a reclining woman stretching toward Myanmar. Wat Tham Pha Chom is located near the “hair” section of the mountain, offering scenic panoramic views. Looking eastward, visitors can clearly see Wat Phra That Doi Wao.

 

Getting There The temple is easily accessible from Mae Sai Market. Head toward the Thai-Myanmar border checkpoint. Before reaching the bridge, there is a left turn leading down to the temple. It takes about 2 minutes by car. Alternatively, visitors can use local tricycles or motorcycle taxis. Walking takes approximately 20 minutes.
