Wat Phra That Chedi Luang is an ancient temple of Chiang Saen, built by King Saen Phu, the grandson of King Mangrai the Great, the first ruler of the Lanna Kingdom, in B.E. 1887 (around the middle of the 19th Buddhist century). This was a period when the Lanna Kingdom was in its early stage of city-building and political consolidation. For this reason, the temple was not only a place for religious practice, but also a symbol of power, devotion, and the prosperity of Chiang Saen during that era.

 

After the temple was built, King Saen Phu moved to rule Chiang Mai in place of his father, King Chai Songkhram, who resided in Chiang Rai. He also brought back the ashes of King Mangrai the Great, who had passed away in Chiang Mai, to Chiang Rai. This story reflects the close ties within the Lanna royal lineage and the importance of Chiang Saen as one of the major cities of the region during that time.

 

The principal monument of the temple, Phra That Chedi Luang, is a Lanna-style bell-shaped chedi and is regarded as the largest chedi in Chiang Saen. It is said to have been approximately 88 meters high, with a base about 24 meters wide. The immense scale of this chedi gave rise to the name “Chedi Luang,” meaning “Great Chedi,” and it became the defining identity that sets this temple apart from others in the area.

 

From a distance, the chedi appears as a massive structure rising above the surrounding trees and ruins, creating a sense of grandeur and dignity. Yet when viewed up close, visitors can appreciate the details of the brickwork, the base construction, and the overall form of the chedi, all of which reflect the architectural wisdom of Lanna craftsmen in the past. Its design emphasizes stability, weight, and balance, which is why this great monument has remained standing through many centuries.

 

Within the temple grounds, in addition to the great chedi, there are also the remains of a large viharn. Although it has collapsed with time, its base and layout can still be seen clearly. These ruins help visitors imagine the scale and magnificence of the temple in its former glory. There are also 4 subsidiary chedis in different forms, showing the diversity of artistic styles from the same historical period.

 

Although the ancient structures within the temple have suffered damage over time, they have been continuously restored and maintained, allowing the site to preserve its integrity and historical value very well. These restorations have not diminished the temple’s original character; instead, they help visitors better understand the structure and significance of the site.
